Say Hello To The Pope Lyrics

The doorbell of your house
Still bears your name
But you'll never come back to this place
You were sitting on your steps
Yesterday again
I guess it's just an old neighbourhood thing

You don't have to pray
Because he knows my name
So just remind yourself
To say hello to the pope

You can swear all you like
But you're still such a beautiful girl
Especially when you walk through that door
in your Sunday best
So justo ne more cigarette and a vodka for you
I'll even dance to oldtime music for you

You don't have to pray
Because he knows my name
So just remind yourself
To say hello to the pope

Cover art for Say Hello To The Pope lyrics by James Dean Bradfield

James wrote this song for an old lady living next to him. He used to spend some time with her and they had discussions about religion and other stuff. That´s why the chorus is "So just remind yourself To say hello to the pope". She died and so he wrote this song for her. :) This song has nothing to do with break ups!

Seems to be a break up song - at least the first line indicates it to be. As for the title, I think James is basically saying, you don't have to worry (about leaving me) as I'm going to be ok.

Why is he telling her to say hello to the pope?

The second verse was written for me... well... I pretend it was. It's nice listening to this on headphones and have James whisper what a beautiful girl you are in to your ears :)

I agree it does sound like a breakup song, but as for the hello to the pope part, well I'm lost. The only relevance I can put to it is that it's an ironic suggestion about divorce, as the pope is the head of the Catholic church.
