The Walls Came Down Lyrics

Weh-hell

Well they blew the horns
And the walls came down
They'd all been warned
And the walls came down

They stood there laughing
They're not laughing anymore
The walls came down, ahhh

Sanctuary fades, congregation splits
Nightly military raids, the congregation splits
It's a song of assassins, ringin' in your ears
We got terrorists thinking, playing on fears

Well they blew the horns
And the walls came down
They'd all been warned
But the walls came down

I don't think there are any Russians
And there ain't no yanks
Just corporate criminals
Playin' with tanks

Die-yi-yi-yi-yi-yi-yah, Die-yi-yi-yi-yi-yi-yah
Die-yi-yi-yi-yi-yi-yah, Die-yi-yi-yi-yi-yi-yah, Yes, come on
Die-yi-yi-yi-yi-yi-yah, Die-yi-yi-yi-yi-yi-yah
Come on, come on, come on
Die-yi-yi-yi-yi-yi-yah, Die-yi-yi-yi-yi-yi-yah, Wake up
Die-yi-yi-yi-yi-yi-yah, Die-yi-yi-yi-yi-yi-yah, Go, yeah-eah
Die-yi-yi-yi-yi-yi-yah, Die-yi-yi-yi-yi-yi-yah, Woh-woh
Die-yi-yi-yi-yi-yi-yah, Die-yi-yi-yi-yi-yi-yah
Die-yi-yi-yi-yi-yi-yah, Die-yi-yi-yi-yi-yi-yah
Come on, come on, come on, come on
Die-yi-yi-yi-yi-yi-yah [fade]

EIGHTIES! YES!

"I don't think there are any Russians / And there ain't no yanks / Just corporate criminals / Playin' with tanks" was darkly funny back then. It's arguably even more darkly funny today.

Whether part of the specific thinking of the band, certainly they were concerned with the samme issues that Dwight D Eisenhower spoke of in his 1961 Farewall Address to the Nation where he coins the term Military Industrial Complex.

This comes to mind as it is The 50th Anniversary of that famous speach.

"A vital element in keeping the peace is our military establishment. Our arms must be mighty, ready for instant action, so that no potential aggressor may be tempted to risk his own destruction... This conjunction of an immense military establishment and a large arms industry is new in the American experience. The total influence – economic, political, even spiritual – is felt in every city, every statehouse, every office of the federal government. We recognize the imperative need for this development. Yet we must not fail to comprehend its grave implications. Our toil, resources and livelihood are all involved; so is the very structure of our society. In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist. We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals so that security and liberty may prosper together."

They should have reissued this one in '89 when the Berlin Wall fell.

Michael Been said this about "The Walls Came Down":

"There was a great deal happening politically - Grenada, Lebanon, or the government saying the Russians are evil and the Russian government probably saying the same about us. That kind of thinking inspired me to write the last lines of 'Walls Came Down'."

It seems to me that Been is also interjecting the imagery of the Isrealites led by Joshua during their siege of Jericho. On the seventh day of the siege the priests blew their trumpets made of ram horns and the people shouted and Jericho's wall fell allowing Isreal to destroy the city.

What a cool anti-capitalism song. I hate capitalism and I love communism, this song is a good manifesto against the evil capitalist system
