Work Lyrics

Just in case, I will leave my things packed so I can run away
I cannot trust these voices

I don't have a line of prospects that can give some kind of peace
There is nothing left to cling to that can bring me sweet release
I have no fear of drowning, it's the breathing that's taking all this work

Do you know what I mean when I say, 'I don't want to be alone.'
What I mean when I say, 'I don't want to be alone.'

Empty spaces, shadows hit by street lights
warning signs and weight of tired conversations

In the absence of a shoulder, in the abscess of a thief
On the brink of this destruction, on the eve of bittersweet
Now all the demons look like prophets and I'm living out
every word they speak, every word they speak

Do you know what I mean when I say, 'I don't want to be alone, '
What I mean when I say, 'I don't want to be alone'
What I mean when I say, 'I don't want to be alone.'

Do you know what I mean when I say, 'I don't want to be alone.'....
I have no fear of drowning. It's the breathing that's taking all this work.

'We wrote this song out on the road, which we don’t really do a lot. It was sort of our first experience writing as a full band, with our drummer and our bass player in the mix. I wrote the lyrics about a week after hanging out with these guys and getting their stories. One of the things that we all just fight against is isolation. Sort of the root, our tendency is to sort of be alone. But being alone causes us to believe things about ourselves that aren’t true, and it’s the downward spiral.' - Dan Haseltine (Jars Of Clay)

And we don't ever have to be alone! Because in God we find our true identity, that to Him, we are more precious than all the riches in the world

I love this song!! And it is true...i don't want to be alone. When I sing it and I first heard it, I remember telling God that I don't want to be alne. That whatever it is I do, and it's in His will, that He may be with me every step of the way! And so far I have seen Him there with me!!!

I love this song. I never want to be alone in the world in terms of living without God but it's also hard to go through life without a true true friend or significant other that really understands you. This is one of those songs that you can instantly relate to, and it makes you feel better to know there are others out there in the boat.

This song totally screams desperation! I love it. I mean, it's like you're telling God please don't leave me; without you, I'm nothing. The refrain just sounds like you're crying out to God because you know deep down inside, that you're hurting and vulnerable and you're tired hearing all these "demons" that "look like prophets". Amazing...

My favorite line of all time, not just from this song, "I have no fear of drowning, it's the breathing that is taking all this work."

We all know we can get through things, and that all the hurt and pain will eventually pass. But the process of getting through them is often harder said than done. Even though we know we can get through them, it doesn't lessen the pain.

I took this song as meanning that we can't 'work' our way into heaven. That if we rely solely on ourselves then we will end up all alone in hell. Thus, we need God.

This may not be completely what the athors intended but I interpret the song to be talking about living a life holy for God. I find it very hard when I am not surrounding my self with fellow Christians with good teaching, insight and discussion.

"I have no fear of drowning, it's the breathing that's taking all this work." I too really like this line and its honesty. I relate to it this way: I don't have time to worry about "drowning" in or being consumed by the larger problems in my life when it is hard enough just living my life daily for God.

The way I interpret it, "I have no fear of drowning, its the breathing that's taking all this work" Jars is pointing out how illogical it is that we do not let the Holy Spirit completely "drown" our lives (kinda like living water at the woman at the well). We are saying we aren't afraid of God taking over our lives, but we are still fighting it, and its taking all this work. Thus, we do not have complete faith in God, which is said when we ask God "do you know what I mean when I say I don't wanna be alone?" thinking that if we really do follow God, we will be alone.

Hi everyone, can somebody help me with the meaning of " in the abscess of a thief" im from Argentina and does not have a literal meaning for me... thanks

@Hierroika I think in the abscess of a thief is a new term that Jars of Clay made up. He is trying to say that he is becoming infected with the characteristics of a thief and it ties together with the rest of that section with him falling into failure/sin/depression because of his isolation.

This song speaks to addicts as well. The opposite of addiction is connection. It's being in community and being vulnerable and honest. And it is work, it is not easy. It's easy to turn inward and let your shame wash over you until it...
