I think its about a close friend, or a family member that died and hes talking about seeing him/her again in heaven.
yeah i agree with 'aidthemartyr'. or you can say 'on top of the world' can be anything. like maybe college, and the person who is left behind has road leading to the same place as the person who left. when it says 'So I'm following the road to where you are' or it could mean the whole death thing.

wow thats so sad.. yeah when i first heard it i thought it was like a romance song.. but after REALLY listening to it.. it came to me that it was probably a family member or close friend that he couldnt see in real life, becasue of some kind of death.. my friend Alyssa died 2 weeks ago from cancer and the last time i saw her alive i told her about this song.. so it completely reminds me of her. great song, brings me to tears.

yah it's definitely about someone dying(in this case his mom)and that he's promising her that they'll meet in heaven.
yes, when i first listened to this, i thought that it was about the death of a loved one immediately. i think that it's about losing someone and then just having to believe they're there, pretending to talk to them, be with them. i think the road, [i'm following the road to where you are, streetlights] represents the road of life, the stars are heaven/the afterlife. so he'll eventually die and see his loved one again.
