Brandy (You're a Fine Girl) (Looking Glass cover) Lyrics

There's a port on a western bay
And it serves a hundred ships a day
Lonely sailors pass the time a way
And talk about their homes

There's a girl in this harbor town
And she works laying whiskey down
They say, "Brandy, fetch another round"
She serves them whisky and wine
The sailors say...

Brandy, you're a fine girl
(You're a fine girl)
What a good wife you would be
(She'll be fine girl)

Your eyes could steal a sailor from the sea

Brandy wears a braided chain
Made of finest silver from the north of Spain
A locket that bears the name of the man that Brandy loves
He came on a summers day, bearing gifts from far away
But he made it clear he couldn't stay
The harbor was his home

Brandy, you're a fine girl
(You're a fine girl)
What a good wife you would be
(She'll be fine girl)

Brandy used to watch his eyes
As he told his sailor stories
She could feel the ocean fall and rise
She saw its raging glory
But he had always told the truth
Lord, he was an honest man
And Brandy does her best to understand

At night when the bars close down
Brandy walks through a silent town
And loves a man who's not around
She still can hear him say
She hears him say...

I think this song is about this woman called Brandy, and every sailor who comes by to this bar adore her and would love to marry her. But the thing is, she's married to her husband, who is also sailor and who is never home, yet Brandy will always be loyal to him.

i disagree to the husband... i think brandy loves a sailor, and he loves her too, but he can´t give up the sea, because he loves the sea too. to be sailor is very dangerous and he lives on a ship for weeks and months and brandy misses him very much, but she can´t marry him because she´d be alone for a long time and she can´t know if her sailor is alive or not, and so they haven´t got a real chance for a future and a family together. he´s got the decision: a family with brandy or the sea. i think he choose the sea: but my wife my lover my lady is the sea. very sad, but great song and story!!

Haven't heard the Chili Peppers cover yet, but I LOVE the original version by Looking Glass. It was written and sung by the guitarist, Elliot Lurie, and the character "Brandy" is loosely based on a girl he knew with a similar sounding name. To me, "Brandy" is a beautiful but sad story of a "fine girl" who is in love with a man who can't put her first in his own life. Nevertheless, he's an "honest man" who always tells the truth. The paradox is that as soon as this guy gives up his career for her, he ceases to be the man she fell in love with! So, instead, she decides to see him whenever she can and just love him in her memory the rest of the time. A poetic tragedy.
