Backbone Lyrics

Indestructible
On this rock I lie
But I’m alive for good
And I just free myself now
From all what was wrong
Break the unbreakable

All the stars
Fearlessly bright
They call me out there
Order me to face the wind
My structure’s alive,
My body’s on the way
Don’t bow down
Before the walls
Of fear and madness
They try to counter me
And strike me down
To the ground again

Inexhaustible
The strength of fire
Is running through me
Spike like beam of light
What mortal could ever
Break this force
Unconstrained
I see at last
My backbone straighten
Thy serpent made of bones
Finally rise up
From the ground awaken

Beat your feet
On the ground now, go !

This song is definilty about someone's transformation or spritual journey within. The first verse is introducing the situation. A person laying on a rock alive and aware of the cold reality of his ignorance. He wants to free himself from what he was and break barriers that people don't normally break. The next verse starts his journey out with engaging his enlightenment, going to the stars, symbols for dreams or goals. He then faces the wind and must stand in the face of people trying to use fear and power to create madness and manipulate the stupid masses. The man on the journey must look past this and realize how and what the antagonist is trying to do to him. Once he defeats this he becomes enlightened. The last verse just talks about how he is enlightened hence Inexhaustible, not able to run out of drive "strength of fire is running through me" hes now empowered by his transformation. Now he is unchained by the ways of the old. His backbone straightens and becomes much better than what he was. Before he was hunched over a symbol for being ingorant and hampered.

----- continuation

Now he is a better person through his trials ready to take on anything.

This is a classic story of os spiritual enlightenement. Biblical allusions and references can be seen here. In Buddhisim this parallels the story of Siddartha Guatama and his path through adversity to ultimate Nirvana and enlightenment. There can be likenesses seen with the story of jesus christ with his crucifixation and ensuing ressurerection and godliness and holiness that comes with coming back to life.

Great song amazing band. I saw them with Trivium machine head and lamb of god. At the time i never heard of them and liked the sound but didnt realize how amazing they were. looking back i see how amazing they played and that they are an extremley talented band. Watch out for Gojira they comin thru

I think the "Rock" is a metaphor for our Planet.

the speed of the guitars is frantic!

Its the main character of the story going outside the normal city life into the wilderness where he can finally see the stars, he freed himself from what made him feel deadlike. He feels the stars calling him to do something about his problems. He gains courage and the passion to do his duty, so he get's up and does it.

Its actualy about how joe says he feels indestructable due to the fact that he believes we exist after death. And with that knowledge he feels he can take on life head first.

I love Gojira in more than one way theye taught me to have respect for this earth and us as humans, but this is a rather ignorant song as he is putting his life and faith into an unlikley outcome. we know where we are going as humans some are just too ignorant to accept truth and fact.

I can relate to your mixed emotions about Gojira. I am drawn to Joe's spirituality, but I cannot just decide to believe what he believes about the afterlife, however comforting or empowering it may be to conceive it.
