Robbers Lyrics

sulkin'
walkin' 'round the city after dark
need protection from street thugs
who clip the tires
and rip the doors off rugs
and cowards

and all this life we've glorified
robbin' from the blind
it's not easy, you see
don't think I don't know sympathy
my victims in my shadow
starin' back at me

not me, I'm knockin
tip toe outside a stranger's door
casually let myself in
fill pockets with
trinkets, purses, china antique armoirs

and all this life we've glorified
robbin' from the blind
it's not easy you see
don't think I don't know sympathy
my victims in my shadow
starin back at me

as robbers in my thoughts
they tell me what to think
they're hiding in my clothes
crawling in the kitchen sink

I'm going to take this in a different direction:

I believe this song is political. Cold War Kids are using the analogy of a robber or thief to represent the government leeching off of its citizens.

They explain in the song how they rob from the "blind" people of the nation much like a robber would. However, "not me, I'm knockin" implies that they are not trying to hide it; i.e., taxes.

The catch is, the people of the government are citizens as well: "don't think I don't know sympathy / my victims in my shadow / starin back at me" where the victims in "my" shadows are themselves.

my thoughts exactly, you worded the part about the victim in my shadow well. thank you!

there are a few misprints in these lyrics

sulkin' walkin' 'round the city after dark need protection from street thugs who clip the locks and rip the doors off rugs like cowards

and maybe even further, its not just about the government, but perhaps the blind citizens themselves keeping this insane imbalance in existence. robbing themselves so to speak. consumer nation if you will.

he's so desperate that he has to do these things even though he feels much remorse after. we all have these feelings, they have just embodied into a simple theif with remorse story

yeah that sounds right but k doesn't it sound more like "Clip the locks" than "Clip the tires"?

i think it's just a song dedicated to the perspective of a burglar. quite literal. thinking of his life choices, and how, despite how society looks upon people like him, is empathetic and regretful.

"don't think I don't know sympathy my victims in my shadow starin back at me" It seems that the person feels regretful for stealing. I see the victim in the shadow is the burgalers way of saying that "I too am a victim of these actions, I already feel bad enough". The person seems to be in denial of what they're doing, they don't want to admit that they're a criminal too. The person knows they're doing the wrong thing but admitting it is devastating for them.
