He's in love with his (best?) friend and she doesn't know. "Hearing something not right in your tone Got a feeling that you're not quite on your own" - jealousy when she's seeing/dating other guys.

He's miserable & wishes she'd see how much she means to him.. an example of this is: "I'll drown ten thousand leagues If it means that you'll miss me" - he's trying to get her attention.

It's a sad song, I love it.
