Gravity's Gone Lyrics
I went stumbling through the fog trying to find a reason for the things I told her
She woke up sunny side down and I was still thinking I was too proud to flip her over
Between the champagne hand jobs and the kissing ass by everyone involved
Cocaine rich comes quick and that's why the small dicks have it all
So I'll meet you at the bottom if there really is one
They always told me when you hit it you'll know it
But I've been falling so long it's like gravity's gone and I'm just floating
Those little demons ain't the reasons for the bruises on your soul you've been neglecting
You'll never lose you're mind as long as you're heart always reminds you where you left it
And don't ever let them make you feel like saying what you want is unbecoming
If you were supposed to watch you're mouth all the time I doubt you're eyes would be above it
So I'll meet you at the bottom if there really is one
They always told me when you hit it you'll know it
But I've been falling so long it's like gravity's gone and I'm just floating
Between the champagne hand jobs and the kissing ass by everyone involved
What used to be is gone and what ought to be ought not to be so hard
So I'll meet you at the bottom if there really is one
They always told me when you hit it you'll know it
But I've been falling so long it's like gravity's gone and I'm just floating
But I've been falling so long it's like gravity's gone and I'm just floating

It think its a song about getting conned by the suits in the music industry to sell out. The phrase "falling for so long" means free fall to the bottom -- obvioiusly -- but also falling for the tricks of those "little demons." The bottom finally hit him when he woke up next to the strange woman.
Most musicians never rise above the initial riches and lose it all to the cocaine and women. They are just distractions like the "champagne hand jobs and kissing ass" that allow the "small dicks" to lead you to sell your soul for their profit.
As the second verse says, you have to follow your heart and not be afraid to stand up for your beliefs or they will take everything you got.
@Tedvi One of the most significant things about the Drive By Truckers is that their songs represent what it means to be a southerner. The songs inform people about the many misconceptions about southerner people from the south. That's the whole point of the Southern Rock Opera: "We're not all the stupid, RACIST, rednecks that you think we are." (Not that there is anything wrong with being a redneck, as Patterson Hood said in the documentary about the Drive By Truckers).

When I first heard this I really liked the line that goes, "If you were supposed to watch you're mouth all the time I doubt you're eyes would be above it"
But, then I started to realize that this song is a just a big collection of great lines.
Cooley is muh hero.
"cocaine and rich comes(cums) quick thats why the small dicks have it all" is a refrence to over compensation issues. napoleon syndrome. i.e. guys spend money and coke on girls to try and make up for thier lacking.
I'm not positive about the double entendre on comes. But knowing mike cooley's writing style. I'm sure hes thought about that.
"If you were supposed to watch you are mouth all the time I doubt you are eyes would be above it"? That doesn't make any sense.
If you were supposed to watch YOUR mouth all the time I doubt YOUR eyes would be above it
I love this song but I do not understand it. Anybody got some comments on the "cocaine rich comes quick" line??
he's talking about drug dealers in that one and obviously he doesn't think highly of em.
i agree completely...the truckers are masters for sure.
I don't agree that it's a collection of lines that do not have anything to do with each other. It seems to me that the first and second lines are both about the same person and situation. It sounds like he started talking while he was feeling no pain and then was trying to preserve his dignity by not interacting with her the morning after. Like ''coyote ugly.'' ''Hitting bottom'' refers to the lowest point in a cycle of alcoholism. Aparently, he's never found it.
when he's gone i see that truckers have put out a new good album, NPR took note, gotta love them, the nerds.
patterson is a npr mind in a mtv world. he just doesn't put the bumper sticker on the car in tuscaloosa.
"I went stumbling through the fog trying to find a reason for the things I told her She woke up sunny side down and I was still thinking I was too proud to flip her over"
I went for a walk to try to figure out why I said what I said to her.....
"She woke up sunny side down and I was still thinking I was too proud to flip her over"
She was still mad when she woke up and I was too proud to apologize.
"I've been falling so long it feels like gravity's gone and I'm just floatin'"
Things are bad in my life. At first, I felt like I was in a downward spiral, but its been that way for so long that it feels normal now.
@hoosierbeth "Sunny side"--like "keep on the sunny side of life". Its a song that any self-respecting southerner knows.

There's a dark and a troubled side of life; There's a bright and a sunny side, too; Tho' we meet with the darkness and strife, The sunny side we also may view. There's a dark and a troubled side of life; There's a bright and a sunny side, too; Tho' we meet with the darkness and strife, The sunny side we also may view. [chorus] Keep on the sunny side, always on the sunny side, Keep on the sunny side of life; It will help us every day, it will brighten all the way, If we keep on the sunny side of life. Tho' the storm in its fury break today, Crushing hopes that we cherished so dear, Storm and cloud will in time pass away, The sun again will shine bright and clear. Let us greet with a song of hope each day, Tho' the moments be cloudy or fair; Let us trust in our Savior always, Who keepeth everyone in His care.
