Jackson Square Lyrics

dust cloud coming off an old dirt road
that leads up here to this little graveyard
seven lights in a perfect row
under each light is a police car
just because you say it doesn't make it true
you can say that I'm guilty, man i just don't care
you can run my body black
just don't make me go back to Jackson Square

i met you on Decatur street
with your little bare feet and you violin
i was walking by with my guitar in my hand
you smiled at me and i jumped right in
before i knew it you were all i knew
every moment together was an answered prayer
after a while we had some money saved up
and we rented a room over Jackson Square

but one day everything changed
your eyes got strange you didn't seem yourself
you go to tell a story and you start out fine
half way through it you'd be somewhere else
and i started having the strangest dream
i held a string and looked up in the air
and you were glowing with the strangest light
drifting out of sight over Jackson square

life is something that you can't control
when you try to hold on to it, it makes you let go
things are not like they were before
i can hear her crying through the bathroom door
she says she hears spirits all around the room
and they're telling her things that make her feel scared
i have no idea what to do
before were in over our heads on Jackson Square

i woke up with the weight on my chest
people were screaming on the street below
i reached for you, i was alone in the bed
the wind was blowing through an open window
and suddenly i was very old, and a little bold
absolutely nowhere
staring at the side of the universe
and your tiny body down on Jackson Square

and don't tell me that there ain't no end
there damn well is and it waits in the wings
i see you kneeling there at center stage
in your tiny cage made of angel wings
well I'm here every night
loading my gun and trying not to go there
anyone who says that life is clear
has never seen a mirror
or been to Jackson Square

I think this is about when Mason was young. He went to New Orleans and met a girl. They ended up living together but she commited suicide. Beautiful song.

One of my favorite songs ever. Wish more people took notice of it.

As for the meaning of the song, I think its pretty self explanatory.

i absolutely love this song.

Definitely about a girl he fell in love with in New Orleans. She, sadly, went crazy over time until one day she committed suicide. At the beginning of the song hes about going to visit her grave and ends up telling the person with him the tragic story. At the end he mentions that "anyone who says that life is clear has never seen a mirror or been to Jackson Square." I think this means that if you think that the happenings of this life are straightforward, you've never looked inside yourself at your own insanity, nor have you gotten close enough to anyone else to experience theirs. He obviously by "loading [his] gun and trying not to go there" has experienced both. Sad song.

I started listening to Jennings after listening to Streetlight Manifesto's cover of Birds Flying Away (as I'm sure many, many other people did) and he instantly piqued my interest. This song definitely solidified him as one of my new favorite artists.

Just realized the full meaning to this song exactly how most meanings come, standing in the rain smoking your last cig and singing the blues.

The first verse is about her funeral procession and him being blamed for her death and how any punishment they could give would be easier to handle then going back the their apartment where she died.

The third verse is about him having a premonition of her death. Dreaming about her soul drifting away over their apartment.

The fifth verse is him waking up and suddenly realizing what has happened with out really knowing it yet. How his heart suddenly scared like an old man and how he felt totally removed from the universe.

The sixth is up to you. I think its about him living in the grief and trying not to pull the trigger.

I got an opportunity to meet Mason Jennings tonight after a show. I asked him what this song is about and he said.. "I'm still trying to figure that one out." haha.
