I saw she was living under some branches
I saw she was happy in her circumstances
I also live under branches
I'd rather not live in these places
We won't get married
'Cause she won't have me
She wakes up awfully early these days, these days
And there's no-one else so kind
There's no-one else to find
It's hard for me but I'm trying
It's hard for me but I'm trying
I saw she was busy gathering wood for a fire
I'd like to help her some but she replies it's done
We won't get married
'Cause she won't have me
She wakes up awfully early these days, these days
And there's no-one else so kind
There's no-one else to find
It's hard for me but I'm trying
It's hard for me but I'm trying
It's hard for me but I'm trying (It's hard for me but I'm trying)
It's hard for me but I'm trying (It's hard for me but I'm trying)
I saw she was happy in her circumstances
I also live under branches
I'd rather not live in these places
'Cause she won't have me
She wakes up awfully early these days, these days
There's no-one else to find
It's hard for me but I'm trying
It's hard for me but I'm trying
I'd like to help her some but she replies it's done
'Cause she won't have me
She wakes up awfully early these days, these days
There's no-one else to find
It's hard for me but I'm trying
It's hard for me but I'm trying
It's hard for me but I'm trying (It's hard for me but I'm trying)

Ahh...this album is so mournful and thought-provoking. I possess the same kind of faith in my opinions as circle_w does, but...
This song just feels like it's speaking of two people who have experienced their own share of pain - "...I also live under branches, I'd rather not live in these places..." - and while the writer now attempts to seek partnership and solace in this kind woman, she seems content to seek it within herself. She struggles with this though, as she "...wakes up awfully early these days..."
The verse that says "I saw she was busy...etc.," evokes images of someone reaching out, only to be told not to bother, they don't need it.
what, no comments?
come on, you can't hear 'we won't get married..' and not be touched in some way?
beautiful song.
i'd like to hear what people have to say about this song.. because i've too little faith in my own (uninformed) opinions, and i really really like this song, esp. the 'we won't get married 'cause she wont have me' line.. i mean, is this song based on a true story, ?
hmm, that's quite a nice take on things, Smarm. your belief that she is content to seek solace within herself perfectly explains why she is happy (living under branches) whereas the narrator is not.
this is -such- a melancholy song.. beautiful, all the same, yet so sad, so desolate.. i really -feel- the narrator's sense of helplessness (even if it is fictional!)
Unrequited love. She is happy with her life but he is unhappy with his because she dosen't love him and he can't see how he could ever love anyone else. It's great to hear bands singing about simple themes in a not too obvious way. Great band, beautiful songs.
It's about love not returned. I didn't like the music to these lyrics at first, but the heroic horns undergirding Tim Smith's "it's hard for me but I'm trying" liturgy is pure musical genius.
