Keyholes & Curtains Lyrics
as long as we keep dancing darling
and the words i say still mean absolutely nothing
you'll keep yours with him
but i'll keep mine hidden
safe as houses behind keyholes and curtains
lock the door behind you darling
and box away those half full feelings
a new entry in your strained litany
of things that make you hate your body
so save your breath dear you dont have to
cause your weighted inflections speak volumes
and your cranberry cheeks betray you
so just keep yours with him
and i'll keep mine hidden
two strangers bound by nothing certain
safe as houses behind keyholes and curtains
and the words i say still mean absolutely nothing
but i'll keep mine hidden
and box away those half full feelings
a new entry in your strained litany
of things that make you hate your body
cause your weighted inflections speak volumes
and your cranberry cheeks betray you
and i'll keep mine hidden
two strangers bound by nothing certain

A mother trying to repress her feelings of misery towards her life with her family. The line Safe As Houses is so clever. Houses are pretty safe physically and it should be a home of comfort but for this character the home is a reminder of her troubled past and present torment. So she is about as safe as houses in this situation; forgetting everything about her life but it's still there, still inside the house. Those walls and ceilings don't protect her, the Keyholes and Curtains can still be seen through.
I think it's about a married couple and one or both of them are cheating and they don't even care enough to put much effort into the facade.
