Model Worker Lyrics

I'm sick of working on the land
I want to work with machines and look handsome

I have been indulging
In ostentatious display
Doing little more than eat
Three square meals a day

And I've been shirking my duty
So I've been sending gifts to curry favour

But because I love you
And because you love me
A model worker
I'll willingly be

I need a holiday, I've not been well
Take me to the Brocade River Hotel

And I just want to know
While the revolution lasts
Will it enable me
To swallow broken glass!

I'm not too worried by hegemony
I know that Carter will look after me

And I just want to know while the revolution lasts
Will it enable me to swallow broken glass!

I have been indulging in ostentatious display
Doing little more than eat three square meals a day

But because I love you...

It's about a chimpanzee in a dress that gets caught by his mum "spanking the monkey". When his dad gets home they all have a bit of a gardening session and plant some turnips but it all goes horribly wrong and Hitler invades Poland. When he wakes up he realises he's eaten his hands and spends the rest of his life behind the sofa counting the hairs on his elbows

It's not "the cadre", it's "that Carter will look after me". As in Jimmy. After Reagan won the election, it changed to "that Reagan will look after me". Check the live version on Play.

I did submit a change, but it doesn't look like that's a quick or easy process. So for anyone who really cares, I thought I'd post it here too.

I always thought it was drawing parallels between the West and East - communist and capitalist workers wanting to try something a little different, knowing it will probably be the same. A great and wacky song! Magazine at their best.

He's making fun of starry-eyed sloganeers and vicious Robespierres with the line "And I just wanna know, while the revolution lasts, will it enable me to swallow broken glass?"
