Begin Lyrics
Hey, maybe the time
just wasn't right to hang on
When are you gonna learn
Sometimes things turn instead of turn out
Hey, when are you gonna stand
Stop looking over your shoulder
Me, with a head full of words
And not one useful expression
Hey, let go
We, with holes in our hearts
Were whole at the start
Our story began
We film ourselves 'til the end
Try to suspend our lives in the dark
Hey, when are you gonna stand
Stop looking over your shoulder
See, there's a sun in the sky
And a moon that will take us til morning
When are you gonna stand
Stop and begin this moment
Hey, let go
Let go (will we be the ones to understand?)...
just wasn't right to hang on
When are you gonna learn
Sometimes things turn instead of turn out
Stop looking over your shoulder
Me, with a head full of words
And not one useful expression
Hey, let go
Were whole at the start
Our story began
We film ourselves 'til the end
Try to suspend our lives in the dark
Stop looking over your shoulder
See, there's a sun in the sky
And a moon that will take us til morning
When are you gonna stand
Stop and begin this moment
Hey, let go
Let go (will we be the ones to understand?)...

So sad that such a beautiful song has only one comment...
When I first heard this song it reminded me of my friend who was in an on again-off again abusive relationship. I understood it as one friend telling another to let go and move on, but really it could apply to anyone and any situation. Sometimes the best thing is to move on and not hold to something that will never be...pretty straight forward.
On the Live at the Mauch Chunk Opera House album she introduces this song as a "reminder to be mindful". She is exploring what happens when we run tape loops in our heads and miss the beautiful things going on around us. She's clearly tired of being this way, but also understands that change will be slow. She's made a commitment to learning to be kinder to herself.
So in a way this IS a classic love song about love and a break-up: she's letting go of a dysfunctional relationship with her comfortable, old self so she can move on to a new and better relationship with someone new—the new self she's still unsure of.
I think it's about two people letting go of course and their relationship didn't turn out to be the best.. Not the best interpretation.. :\
"When are you gonna learn Sometimes things turn instead of turn out" I like how honest that's written. I've never heard, 'MOVE ON!' sound so beautiful.
One of my favorites from Nicky, who is blessed with one of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard. And songwriting and instrument-playing chops to match.
