Sermons vs. the Gospel Lyrics
Getting closer everyday, getting closer everyday
lord have mercy on me, we're talking about two d\ifferent things
television and life magazine
lord have mercy on my
lord have mercy on me
got this idea in my head and i can't get it out
cause all your money and all your culture
i can surely live without
a pile of treaures up on earth
what you keep and what you take
a property, vanity, and even knowledge for knowledge sake
and i said..
lord have mercy on me
we're talking about two different things
televison and life magazines
lord have mercy on me
lord have mercy on me
don't want to see no psychoanalyst
experienced in assisting to adjust
european travel, the h bomb,
presidential elections
front page of the new york times
front page of the new york times
lord have mercy on me
we're talking about two different things
television and life magazine
lord have mercy on me
lord have mercy on me
quit your griping, shine your shoes
tell you a little secret for your blues
don't make no difference
just watching from the stairs
fat lady always claps her hands
lord have mercy on me
sayin.. even if you're robbing from the poor
lord have mercy on me
i believe the words can change the heart,
the words can change the heart,
the words can change the heart..
have mercy on me.. oh lord
lord have mercy on me
talkin' bout two different things
television and life magazines
lord have mercy on me
lord have mercy on me
gettin closer everyday

This song comes after Rubidoux, its very nice
Beautiful song - So cheaply recorded
I really, really, really like this song- it might even be my favorite off of the album. Very...soulful. It's obviously very religious, though I can't tell you more than that. "The words can change the heart." The words= the Bible? That's what I thought.
I think this is about "Franny & Zooey" by J.D. Salinger. For instance, Franny's obsession with the Jesus Prayer - "Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me", and her inner struggle against American culture (materialism and an utter lack of "wisdom"). Once it is suggested she see a psychoanalyst, but that is firmly struck down by her brother Zooey. Later they discuss their brother Seymour telling Zooey to "shine your shoes for the Fat Lady"...
Which one of Salinger's characters SHOULDN'T see a psychoanalyst? Not bashing him, just saying

this song sounds so much like a bob dylan song, its amazing
does any know if it is "just watching from the stairs.." or"whos watching from the stairs?"

I think alia might be right cause apparently god make up your mind is based on another Salinger book.
On a side note, J.D. salinger's work seems to have a large influence on art these days.
on the JD salinger note. pg. 108 in little brown edition of franny and zooey: "...call in some psychoanalyst who's experienced in adjusting people to the joys of television, and life magazine every wednesday, and european travel, and the H-bomb, and presidential elections, and the front page of the Times..."
...additionally, p. 146 "i got the idea in my head--and i could not get it out--that college was just one more dopey, inane place in the world dedicated to piling up treasure on earth and everything...whats the difference whether treasure is money, or propert, or even culture, or even just plain knowledge?...sometimes i think that knowledge--when its knowledge for knowledge's sake, anyway--is the worst of all"
