Not that big Lyrics

Speak to you soon…

I can't wait to come around to raise the stakes
I truly love a fight that's won before it's started; so much fun
I can't stay in case I read your inner page
Don't tell me I'm a right that's wrong
I'd better put my jeans back on

'Cause you're not big in my life
Not big in my life, not big in my life at all
And I'm not big in your life
Not big in your life, not big in your life at all

I don't ask, for everything we've done has passed
Who cares if we will meet again?
It's obvious that we're not friends
I daren't speak of what I'm wishing uselessly
My stupid vision clears to see a sugar mountain melt in me

'Cause you're not big in my life
Not big in my life, not big in my life at all
And I'm not big in your life
Not big in your life, not big in your life at all

I can cut my heart out just like you do
And I can suck the life out of it just like you do
I'm gonna pick myself up and pull myself together; never revel in recovery mode
For when commitment is a dirty word
You can't afford to ever slip or let down your guard

'Cause you're not big in my life
Not big in my life, not big in my life at all
And I'm not big in your life
Not big in your life, not big in your life at all

You're not that big, you're not that big
Oh not that big, you're not that big

A new sexual landscape has evolved within our culture. 30 years ago, women were expected to save their bodies (and thus their reputation) for someone they love, while men were encouraged to play the field. Today, much has changed. Men are still expected to be players, but women have jumped in the arena with them. Dating has been replaced with sexual encounters void of love and commitment. I think that's what this song is about.

To play the game effectively, men and women must remain unattached as mentioned in the song, "For when commitment is a dirty word / You can't afford to ever slip or let down your guard."

Love, while desired, is put on hold or seen as in impossible. "I daren't speak of what I'm wishing uselessly / My stupid vision clears to see a sugar mountain melt in me."

I think the chorus is about either party trying to rationalize this cultural phenomenon. By playing the game, they're both trivializing sex and intimacy and convincing themselves it's ok by saying, "You're not big in my life," and "I'm not big in your life."

I think a part of it is about denial, like the constant repetition of 'you're not big in my life'. They're trying to tell themselves that this person they used to love (who hurt them) isn't a big part of their life, that they didn't really love them fully, that they've gotten over them.

"I can cut my heart out just like you do And I can suck the life out of it just like you do"

This person who has been hurt is capable of doing the same thing -- they're not weak.

"I'm gonna pick myself up and pull myself together; never revel in recovery mode"

They're telling themselves they can get over it, that that person wasn't a big deal to them.

"You're not that big..."
