Dusk and Summer Lyrics

She smiled in a big way, the way a girl like that smiles when the world is hers.
And she held your eyes out in the breeze way down by the shore in the lazy summer.

And she pulled you in and she bit your lip
and she made you hers. She looked deep into you as you laid together, quiet in the grasp of dusk and summer.

But you've already lost, but you've already lost, but you've already lost when you only have barely enough to hang on.

And she combed your hair and she kissed your teeth and she made you better than you've been before. And she told you bad things you wished you could change in the lazy summer.

And she told you laughing down to her core so she would not cry as she lay in your lap and she said, "Nobody here can live forever," quiet in the grasp of dusk and summer.

But you've already lost, but you've already lost, but you've already lost when you only have barely enough to hang on.

And she said, "No one is alone the way you are alone." And you held her looser than you would have if you ever could have known. Some things tie a life together, you slendered threads and things to treasure.

Days like that should last and last and last.

But you've already lost, but you've already lost, but you've already lost when you only have barely enough of her to hang on.

hang on. hang on. hang on.

I feel the girl is definitely beautiful and a huge rebel who loves to be free. It seems like he loves her so much because she pushes away all the pain and behind her strong personality shes so much more fragile. I think he views her as a mystery and a cure to him. Never in the song does he reveal how she feels accept for when he says And she told you bad things you wished you could change in the lazy summer. And she told you laughing down to her core so she would not cry as she lay in your lap" It all sounds so cute and perfect. He starts out by saying "she pulled you in she bit your lip she made you hers", making her seem so sure and dominant, but then she becomes so vulnerable....its what makes the song so good. So realistic....such a beautiful song

My Opinion

I've read the theory about this song being about death. I'm not totally disregarding that but I saw it as something else. I see it as this innocent boy that finds himself falling for a girl that has way more life expierience than he does. Excess baggage, if you will. She's been hurt and that's why she's cynical with the "no one here can live together, quiet in the grasp of dusk and summer". I didn't take that so literal as to actually meaning being alive but more as that summer, like every season, is temporary. She couldn't commit and although they had their good times...he knew it couldn't never work or last.

Chris is so talented and even his simple lyrics have a huge impact on me.

This was me and my ex-boyfriend's song so it's interesting to read everyone's take on it.

It's beautifully tragic

This song captures my current feelings perfectly:

"And you held her looser than you would have if you ever could have known." If I could have known I would have held her that much tighter, told her that much more often what I thought of her.

"but you've already lost when you only have barely enough of her to hang on." We had barely started, and then it was over. I'm left hanging on to the smallest bits of her, the few things I got to know about her. Oh, how bittersweet.

This is one of my all time favorite songs, I take it as the realization that a relationship is ending, "you've already lost, when you only have barley enough to hang on" They aren't over but they might as well be

XX I think this is a song about the death of someone you loved, but someone you hadn't known for very long.

XX If it starts with an "XX" Those are my comments.

She smiled in a big way, the way a girl like that smiles When the world is hers and she held your eyes Out in the breezeway down by the shore in the lazy summer And she pulled you in, and she bit your lip, and she made you hers She looked deep into you as you lay together quiet in the grasp of dusk and summer

XX Remembering the few times you spent together and what you loved about XX her. XX This would be a specific memory being recalled.

But you've already lost But you've already lost But you've already lost When you only had barely enough to hang on

XX You already lost because she is gone. She died while you were getting to XX know her. You have barely enough to hang on to, because you didn't get to XX share many experiences with her.

And she combed your hair, and she kissed your teeth And she made you better than you'd been before

XX Remembering how she helped you and made you better.

She told you bad things you wished you could change in the lazy summer And she told you, laughing down to her core, so she would not cry as she lay in your lap She said "Nobody here can live forever, quiet in the grasp of dusk and summer"

XX She confided in you and told you things you wished you could help her with. XX You saw the more vulnerable side of her. This shows how close you were XX with her.

She said, "No one is alone the way you are alone" And you held her looser than you would have if you ever could have known Some things tie your life together, slender threads and things to treasure Days like that should last and last and last

XX You held her looser than you would have if you knew she was going to be XX gone so soon. XX She was what tied your life together, which implies that your life has now XX come undone. XX The days of happiness should have lasted a lot longer than they did.

Hang on Hang on Hang on

XX Now you are just trying to hang on after the horrible tragedy.

XX This is just my interpretation, although typically mine are kinda depressing XX as you can tell..

I take it as a summer romance lost. It fits with the whole Dusk and Summer theme.

I think this is the absolute best song on the new album. It's beyond amazing.
