Lately Lyrics
On the corner into my car
I drive forever never get far
The 45 is slowly getting loaded
I send another song to my star
California mountains in the mornin'
Stitch it up, and get it all
All along the woman's got a want it
Stitch it up, and get it all
We all walk your pavement, get it off
Take more than your....
Whoa whoa, whoa whoa
A pendulum inside of my bed
Swingin' low, I hope to get hit
The overflow is slow, but not enough no
Another drop will never fix it
California mountains in the mornin'
Get along, and get it all
All along the woman's got a want it
Stitch it up, and get it all
We all walk your pavement, get if off
Take more than your friends
If I call you lately
I could be your man
I could be your greatness
If I call you lately
I could be your man
Whoa whoa, whoa whoa
I shut it down the look in my eyes
Knock 'em dead a' covered in flies
The big sleep without a bed of roses
The light of day will never tell lies
All along the woman's got a want it
Stitch it up, and get it all
California mountains in the mornin'
Stitch it up, and get it all
We all walk your pavement
Take more than your friends
If I call you lately
I could be your man
I could be your greatness
If I call you lately
I could be your man
On the river into my dock
I paddle throught the shadow and fog
To ponder all of those who came before me
Another piece for building my arch
I drive forever never get far
The 45 is slowly getting loaded
I send another song to my star
Stitch it up, and get it all
All along the woman's got a want it
Stitch it up, and get it all

its about his home and being with a girl far away, if he rings her/him it may even surprise himself because its so difficult when the distance is so great. It describes him waking up in the morning and seeing the beauty around him and this can spur him to ring her/him. this is off the dani california single guys you have to hear it if you add me on msn or summat i'll send it to you ♥
I like the guitar on it...it kind of grows on you but it does end a bit quick
i think this song is simply missing his girl
Whoa. How amazing is this song? Seriously.
"California mountains in the mornin'"
I love that line cuz it takes me back to Cali.
So I listen to this and it makes me think of the kinda dance you're doing with a girl where you're hanging out all the time, fucking ("A pendulum inside of my bed") and having fun but you're not "dating" and as much fun as you have with this girl, you're considering if you would even want to seriously date her or if she would want to seriously date you ("All along the woman's gotta want it").
Lyrics like "I drive forever never get far" and "I paddle through the shadow and fog" hint at a futile situation. "The 45 is slowly getting loaded" shows some awareness that the situation is coming to it's conclusion "The overflow is slow but not enough no" as he's not wholly satisfied with her. Maybe because he knows he's not the only guy in the picture ("We all walk your pavement", "To ponder all of those who came before me") or there is another incompatibility ("The light of day will never tell lies").
The situation could be rectified by an honest conversation ("If I call you lately, I could be your man") but he doesn't want to have this kind of serious conversation with her ("I shut it down the look in my eyes") because there's still so much more out there ("California mountains in the mornin, stitch it up and get it all") so ultimately it's just another experience in the journey of life ("Another piece for building my arch").
I'll go one step further and suggest that the usage of John's backing vocals in the chorus implies that this feeling is mutual even if neither of them know the other one feels the same way.
