Streetlight Diaries Lyrics

Street lights carry me home tonight
And this will be the last time that I ever make this drive
We haven't talked in days
And it's clear what you are trying to say
Things are changing and you keep running away
Street lights carry me home tonight
And this will be the last time that I ever make this drive

It was the best it's ever been
But all good things must come to an end
And I'll take one last breath tonight
And watch these headlights pass you by

I can't breath with this burning in my chest
And you've got a history on your breath
That tells of scandals and secrets
I've got reasons for this

You've got heart shapes in ink
Yeah, you wear it on your sleeve
You're so the one-liner
I'm such the critic
We've all been cynics once in our lives
You talk about the hard times
Like you've had such a hard life
Should I be impressed, with how easy you undressed?

It was the best it's ever been
But all good things must come to an end
And I'll take one last breath tonight
And watch these headlights pass you by

I can't breath with this burning in my chest
And you've got a history on your breath
That tells of scandals and secrets
I've got reasons for this
I can't breath with this burning in my chest
And you've got a history on your breath
That tells of scandals and secrets
I've got reasons for this

The truth hurts and you're killing me

I can't breath with this burning in my chest
And you've got a history on your breath
That tells of scandals and secrets
I've got reasons for this
I can't breath with this burning in my chest
And you've got a history on your breath
That tells of scandals and secrets
I've got reasons for this

it's about the end of a relationship, and his mixed fealings, about how he's happy it ended at it's best, and sad that it ended at all

It's actually called "The Streetlight Diaries" not just "Streetlight Diaries"

This song is an almost perfect reflection of what I felt when I had to break up with this girl I had a great relationship with. This song talk about her "history" full of "scandals and secrets" and how she wears the "hearts shapes in ink" on her "sleeve." Clearly this indicates that this particular girl has a lot of heartbreaking secrets in her past (more than likely they're sexual in nature considering "how easy [she] undressed"), and she won't let the singer forget it. These sins have become who she is and what she talks about. The knowledge of such sin in a loved one's past are "burning in [the singer's] chest", and as indicated by the heavy-hearted line, "[t]he truth hurts and you're killing me," this is why he is breaking up with her. Everyone remembers the last drive home from their ex-girlfriend's house, and this is reminiscent of such an event, where all you can do in the driver's seat is think about the relationship you've just ended (or are about to end). It would be easy to judge both parties, him for not forgiving completely, and the other for rubbing her past in his face. However as shown by the lines "You're so the one-liner / I'm such the critic", their natures don't allow for such a high tensity relationship to continue. He's got reasons for this, and so did I. Even if they didn't seem like such good reasons at the time, it was for the best.
