Elegy Lyrics
The pathetic sight of your sunken eyes
The angular lines of your hips and waist
The light and the dark
Of your vallied ribs
The skeletal draw
Of your temples and cheeks
Your breath but a wisp
From your string thin lips
The acrid stink of your face and mouth
Unsound unsure...your shaky legs
Just when you're about to
Learn to smile again
I'm going to be the one to
Teach you how to cry
The angular lines of your hips and waist
The light and the dark
Of your vallied ribs
The skeletal draw
Of your temples and cheeks
Your breath but a wisp
From your string thin lips
The acrid stink of your face and mouth
Unsound unsure...your shaky legs
Learn to smile again
I'm going to be the one to
Teach you how to cry

I fucking love this song, so tragic and moving. Fuck fall out boy up with a golf club
On a live album (and in other live shows), David Yow has professed that this is a song for his mother and father. The poetry suggests one or both have ill health, and that they may have been perpetually disappointed in their son’s actions - in his perception. The delivery and the guitar riff are among the most cutting I’ve heard - near perfect in their portrayal of working class families and their inherent dysfunction and imbalance.
