I can see where you are
I can tell you're enjoying it so far
I would love to escape, but now I'm bound
by the of burn of your eyes
looking on as I'm starting to realize
I'm a pawn in your game and this is checkmate

as the roses lift their heads to catch a glimpse of my demise
you'll be throwing lies around like ocean waves throw down the tides
and they are breaking on my shore
and the rescue team won't save me now I'm out too far

so I'll waste these nights for a while
but I'll be holding onto you forever
and this is where my heart is cold and torn
as I read the words you wrote last night
the butterflies are creeping through my spine

it's a thrill I can't shake
yeah I know we've been writing a mistake
but it's hard to erase the feelings I've drawn
I was caught in an awkward silence
broken down by the sound of your prelude that you played
to open our symphony

I've been sleeping with the sunrise watching hours pass away
incidentally I'm just waiting for the dusk to kill the day
but now I'm waiting for your call
while I bang on this piano like you care at all

so I'll waste these nights for a while
but I'll be holding onto you forever
and this is where my heart is cold and torn
as I read the words you wrote last night
the butterflies are creeping through my spine

as I hear the words you're saying tonight
I'm falling for them every single time
as the roses dip their heads a little further to the ground
there's a season change and all the pinks and whites have turned to brown
will we make it through the fall yeah are we gonna make it through this fall
‘cause I don't wanna fall with you

so I'll waste these nights for a while
but I'll be holding onto you forever
and this is where my heart is cold and torn
as I read the words you wrote last night
the butterflies are creeping through my spine

I'm trying, we're dying, yeahhh
I'm taken by your hope-filled lines
they're well designed and dragging me along
I'll be waiting for this chance and I'll be gone

No, don't agree to the 'one night thing'. I think the girl in this song is using him up. Just wants and needs him for this little bit of affection. He, on the other hand, has real feelings for this girl. And he'd do anything just to be with her. Even it's more than superficial to her. Like he says: I'm just a pawn in your game.. And when finally the chance will be there to actually be something more, he will be gone. SO. Just my two cents ;)

great song, great band, can't say enough about these guys right now.

and i have to agree more with marjolein with a few additions...

in the first verse he is realizing what she is all about, that she is more or less just using him and doesn't feel the same way as he does, so in turn the roses (love altogether) lifts "its" head because he, the love, is realizing everything and is hopefully going to get out of this.

but then he goes on to say it is too late, he has too many feelings for her, although based on forged feelings from her to him, his feelings are still feelings nonetheless and he can't change it. he knows still what she is doing "so I'll waste these nights for a while" but he isn't willing to accept that "but I'll be holding onto you forever" he is too torn and broken to let go of all these feelings, so he believes he can still build something together with this girl.

so he keeps falling for everything once again, and as the happens, the roses dip there heads once again, as he is lost and not getting anywhere away from this whole ordeal with this girl, that is far from love.

great song, all in all she is just lying to him, and he is blinded by his own ambition for love to realize it, i love the roses metaphor, and especially how its sung...once again, great song.

Warren wanted a Beach Boys thing for this one, and Carl Wilson and Billy Hinsche came in, with Carl arranging the vocal parts. The other harmony vocalists (credited as the "Gentlemen Boys") were Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther, Zevon's longtime backers Waddy Wachtel and Jorge Calderon, and Linda Rondstadt/Stone Poneys guitarist Kenny Edwards.

This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines: "Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet" So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other: "I had all and then most of you" Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart "Some and now none of you" Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship. This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"

This song seemingly tackles the methods of deception those who manipulate others use to get victims to follow their demands, as well as diverting attention away from important issues. They'll also use it as a means to convince people to hate or kill others by pretending acts of terrorism were committed by the enemy when the acts themselves were done by the masters of control to promote discrimination and hate. It also reinforces the idea that these manipulative forces operate in various locations, infiltrating everyday life without detection, and propagate any and everywhere. In general, it highlights the danger of hidden agendas, manipulation, and distraction, serving as a critique of those who exploit chaos and confusion to control and gain power, depicting a cautionary tale against falling into their traps. It encourages us to question the narratives presented to us and remain vigilant against manipulation in various parts of society.
