i think its about feeling helpless. they really sound like maroon 5 in the begining.

the lyrics in the CD packet itself say: "But we don't know the authors of the book"
outside of that, i agree with crimson. i think it's about feeling helpless and not being able to see the good, and just trying to hang on to what's good in life.

See it? Every last song on all of their albums is coming from the sky. A pretty cool way to signify that Guster is still aiming for the sky--greatness--well--at least in my opinion.
i love the new cd, and this song is one of the reasons why. i agree, this song is about being hopeless and alone and lost, but it's optimistic. it's telling people that it will get better and just...well...Hang On. I love this song. I especially love the chorus when it goes, "hang on, hang on, there's a twilight, a night time, and a dawn..." i love that part.
when i saw them in concert they said this song was a 'love makin'n' song. i love it

Forst of all, there are definitely some errors in the lyrics, particularly in the second verse.
Also, I think there's the issue of hope, obviously, but I also think that this song has a bit of a philosophical and religious element as well. He is questioning God and our purpose in life. I suppose it's saying that even though you don't have the answers, hang on and you'll find the answers.
Wow, gotta love the irony of a typo leading off a sentence about errors in the lyrics.
