Tearing Up the Oxygen Lyrics
if you drink enough water will i fade
when i'm out of your system forget things that i said.
then the scenery changes.
cars have no remorse they take the world by force
we wish we could travel so relentlessly
even in our sleep we surrender
you can do anything
i should be so lucky.
so now i chase my bags someday they'll take me home
my clothes are worn so thin they accent my bones
the sleep i've lost could rest me.
but clocks keep slippery time
they paint the salt stained lines
of the best and the worst and the maritimes
when your eyes are off me, i'm alone.
they could be anywhere
i should be so lucky
tearing up the oxygen to find one another
when i'm out of your system forget things that i said.

I think it's about a person leaving for a little while, he/she is wondering if the other person will remember the times they shared.
Now that person is in a new place(s) and wishes he/she was braver. They miss home.
I never overanalyze songs. I figured since no one else has commented. I should. I LOVE this song!
the maritime's best song for me!

It's 'recklessly' not 'relentlessly,' but yeah, I believe that this song is about the 'journey' or whatever you want to call it of trying to show someone you love them and how it feels.
From what I can tell of this song, and the majority of the lyrics by this band of others of its ilk, is that they are largely based on personal experience and should be viewed as such. Reading deep meanings, and or specific intrepretations of the lyrics is mostly folly... in my humble opinion.
If reading into the lyrics is "folly" why would you bother to post and why are you even registered on this website? Just because the artist wrote a song from personal experience doesn't mean that others won't find meaning in it.

We can still speculate. I think it's about an argument that causes two people to separate for awhile and pursue their lives in different places. Seems like both have reconciled and want to be back together again.
i remember the first time i heard this on the radio in 2004, it's what introduced me to the whole midwest indie scene. best moment in my life.
