Summertime Dream Lyrics
Where the road runs down but the butternut grove
To old Bill Skinner's stream
Do tell at the noonday bell
It's time for a summertime dream
In a lunch pail town in a one horse way
You can live like a king and queen
Let's steal away in the noonday sun
It's time for a summertime dream
Birds in all creation will be twitterin' in the trees
And down below's a pond I know
You can swim in it if you please
And if you come 'round when the mill shuts down
You can see what chivalry means
Let's steal away in the noonday sun
It's time for a summertime dream
On a trip on down to wonderland
In love among the flowers
Where time gets lost with no straw boss
Tallyin' up the hours
Where the road runs down by the butternut grove
To old Bill Skinner's stream
Do tell at the noonday bell
It's time for a summertime dream
Birds in all creation will be twitterin' in the trees
And down below's a pond I know
You can swim in it if you please
And if you come 'round when the mill shuts down
You can see what chivalry means
Let's steal away in the noonday sun
It's time for a summertime dream
To old Bill Skinner's stream
Do tell at the noonday bell
It's time for a summertime dream
In a lunch pail town in a one horse way
You can live like a king and queen
Let's steal away in the noonday sun
It's time for a summertime dream
Birds in all creation will be twitterin' in the trees
And down below's a pond I know
You can swim in it if you please
And if you come 'round when the mill shuts down
You can see what chivalry means
Let's steal away in the noonday sun
It's time for a summertime dream
In love among the flowers
Where time gets lost with no straw boss
Tallyin' up the hours
Where the road runs down by the butternut grove
To old Bill Skinner's stream
Do tell at the noonday bell
It's time for a summertime dream
And down below's a pond I know
You can swim in it if you please
And if you come 'round when the mill shuts down
You can see what chivalry means
Let's steal away in the noonday sun
It's time for a summertime dream

NO comments?! Wow this is an awesome song, I guess the Gordon fans are kinda out of their element on a computer! hahaha, anyway I love Gordons imagery. This song is so playful and sweet. It's only second to The "Wherefor and The Why" which is an all-time fav.!
O and this song is too self explainatory to interpret. Read it I think you'll be able to follow! lolz
this song was my introduction to Gordon Lightfoot. Watched an old SNL from the 70s and he was the musical guest and performed this song. I was immediately taken away by its simplicity and beauty. The lyrics evoke a really special, romantic imagery and I feel like the song's meaning is pretty straightforward. Needless to say I will be exploring more of Lightfoot's catalog.
As I recall, this song came out about the same time as "Afternoon Delight," by the Starland Vocal Band. Though musically very different, either song reminds me of the other. (I have to admit here, the first time I heard the other song, I thought it was an extended commercial for some kind of beverage. Honest! Ha-ha...)
