Cigarettes and Suitcases Lyrics
Maybe maybe nothing could prepare you
but that something and that someday always comes
and the only thing around worth hanging onto
is a love of twisted symmetry demanding it be done
this way, this way
you're always the last to know
your cigarettes and suitcases
and so on the story goes
you're shell-shocked in your shoelaces
and now that you're on your own..
and it won't be so far away tomorrow
everybody says cause everybody knows
all one by one in single file we follow
paying out the drop like dominoes
today, today
you're always the last to know
your cigarettes and suitcases
and so on the story goes
you're sweet dreams and your sci-fi sunsets
and now that you're on your own (now that you're on your own)
now that you're on your own
Where are you gonna go?
And so on the story goes
And so on the story goes
And so on the story goes
you're always the last to know
your cigarettes and your suitcases
and on and on you go
you're shell-shocked in your shoelaces
now that you're on your own
now that you're on your own
now that you're on your own, on your own
on your own, your own, your own
(now that you're on your own)
but that something and that someday always comes
and the only thing around worth hanging onto
is a love of twisted symmetry demanding it be done
this way, this way
your cigarettes and suitcases
and so on the story goes
you're shell-shocked in your shoelaces

and now that you're on your own (now that you're on your own)
now that you're on your own
Where are you gonna go?
And so on the story goes
And so on the story goes
your cigarettes and your suitcases
and on and on you go
you're shell-shocked in your shoelaces
now that you're on your own
now that you're on your own
now that you're on your own, on your own
on your own, your own, your own
(now that you're on your own)

Aha! That is a great suggestion, that's it's about record companies ripping them off and manipulating them. BUT...there is something bothering me. All the lyric sites dont' mention the parts in the song when Paul says 'silver'. As in "Now that you're on your own, Silver". If you listen to the song, that's what he says. But what could it mean? Maybe that the record companies see them as only being second best? Just an idea.
what a brilliant song off they're #1 debut album "desert lights". i think this song is about the record companies ripping bands off. must say, i am yet to hear the rest of the album.
i love this song. i can't belive its only gotten one comment.

So far as the 'now that you're on your own, Silver' lyric goes, I've listened to this song hundreds of times over the past 6 yrs & I reckon it's a reference to the Lone Ranger/Silver I.E they were inseparable - a team and I think this song is about relationships - how relationships are like being in a team, etc so he's basically saying relationship is over, we're no longer that team - where are you gonna go Silver ?
