Moses Lyrics

Diamonds, roses, I need Moses
To cross this sea of loneliness, part this red river of pain
I don't necessarily buy any key to the future or happiness
But I need a little place in the sun sometimes or I think I will die

Everywhere is somewhere, and nowhere is near
Everybody got somebody with their wine and their beer
So I'm just this tragic figure in the corner over here
With an empty apartment and a best friend who is queer

Every time I see him he smiles
And he tells me how well he's walking these miles
But he never ever asks a single thing about me
If I die, he'd hear about it eventually
Diamonds, roses, I need Moses
To cross this sea of loneliness, part this red river of pain

Everywhere is somewhere, and nowhere is near
Everybody got somebody with their wine and their beer
So I'm just this tragic figure in the corner over here
Go home to an empty apartment and call a best friend who is a queer

Diamonds, roses, I need Moses
To cross this sea of loneliness, part this red river of pain
To cross this sea of loneliness, part this red river of pain
To cross this sea of loneliness, part this red river of pain

how insightful, gmoonit.

this song is beautiful, and her entire first album "living with ghosts" is just plain essential.

this is my favorite part:

"I don't necessarily buy any key to the future Or happiness, But I need a little place in the sun sometimes Or I think I will die.

And everywhere is somewhere And nowhere is near"

there's also a great cover of this song by missy higgins - actually does the original justice.

time to lay out in the sun on the back porch. almost. <3

makes me think of the crow for some reason?

While that's an entertaining interpretation, I really don't see it that way. It's just about having nothing in your life and feeling shitty about it. An empty apartment, no relationship to speak of, no close friends. She calls her gay neighbor her "best friend", but he's someone who doesn't express any interest in her life and would only know if she died "eventually." If that's her closest relationship in the world, she's kind of fucked. It's just a song about loneliness...definitely not about wanting to screw your gay neighbor.

Only one comment for this song? This is one of my favorites. Patty should be more well known.

this is a song about complete isolation

"Everybody got somebody with their wine and their beer"

she's sober. she already ruined her life once, earlier, with drugs or alcohol. she's trying to take the high road. but she's alone. and she can't understand how, in trying to save her own life, she's set apart from life itself.

her best friend is gay - there's no hope of essential connection where she needs it.

and she has fallen in love with someone who doesn't know who she is.

she's a tragic figure. in the corner, over there.
