I know it cuts you inside
Every time that you try
To take a pathway in life
That leaves you so un-obliged

Every promise is lies
Every smile makes you cry
Leaves you so un-alive
So un-alive

I wish I could take the fall
Maybe by that I could solve
The problems we're all having
It's been a while since you've felt like you've been home
Your life's just flesh and bone

Your heart is worth more than you know
The one thing that hurts more than your life
Is to wake up one more time alone
It's to wake up one more time alive

So take us in
We'll stop you dead
We'll show you something you won't ever forget

This life's a road
No place is home
My heart's a hole that needs to
Constantly be filled with love

This time it's all that I've got
Words hit the page like gunshots
My stomach's left in a knot
My pride is left here to rot

It's been a while since I've felt this restless
By definition it's depressing but I'm alright
It kills to wake up one more time alone
It kills to wake up one more time alive

So take us in
We'll stop you dead
We'll show you something you won't ever forget

This life's a road
No place is home
My heart's a hole that needs to
Constantly be filled with love

I know the feeling of being all alone
So let's drink to the fact that we're not
I know the feeling of being all alone
So let's drink to the fact that we're not

So take us in
We'll stop you dead
We'll show you something you won't ever forget

This life's a road
No place is home
My heart's a hole that needs to
Constantly be filled with love

I see this as they are talking to someone who doesn't know Christ as their lord and savior. They are trying to led him to Christ.

Here, "So take us in... we'll show you something you won't ever forget." I think they are saying just listen to them and they'll show you Christ. With the "This life's a road, no place is home" I think they are talking about how life is unexpected, and that nothing earthly will make you happy or solve the problems life presents, cuz you'll just continue wanting more. "My heart's a hole that needs to constantly be filled with love" is saying that their heart needs Jesus, cuz he is everlasting love that won't ever stop, so he will continually fill their heart with love.

We are all born with a damaged soul because of Adam and Eve's sin. And we all are trying to fill that hole in our hearts, in our lives. Some fill it with family, your wife/husband or teenage sweet hearts, drugs, booze, porn, etc. But all those things wont fill it and when they fail your broken. But God, Jesus is the solution to that hole in your heart and he will constantly fill that hole with love (the Holy Spirit).

I think this song is not overtly about God or Christ, but it may be referencing accepting a family of people who can relate to what you feel which could definitely apply to a religious group.

Basically I feel like this song is the heart of the To Write Love on Her Arms movement (myspace.com/towriteloveonherarms).

The speaker is talking to someone who is struggling with depression, and thoughts of suicide (It's been a while since you've felt like you've been home/Your life's just flesh and bone ...The one thing that hurts more than your life/Is to wake up one more time alone/It's to wake up one more time alive). Basically he's saying, "Yeah it hurts like hell to wake up and have to live through a day of this again, I know--I feel it too... But, at least we're suffering through this together" (I know the feeling of being alone/So let's drink to the fact that we're not).

The second part of the song is offering ways to cope (So take us in, we'll stop you dead/ We'll show you something you won't ever forget). This could be either talking about drugs, or a community. I think really it easily could be a good, wholesome community like a church of support group, or a drug culture. The reason I say that is because he follows is with (my heart's a hole that needs to constantly be filled with love). He doesn't offer a permanent solution, he just says, "I know the solution is love," but he leaves it up to the person to decide where to get that love.

He also offers artistic expression as an outlet for restless feelings of this nature (This time it's all that I've got Words hit the page like gunshots My stomach's left in a knot My pride is left here to rot It's been a while since I've felt this restless By definition it's depressing but I'm alright)

The overall message of this song I think is just to convince the person that they are not alone, and that someone understands how they feel--which are two of the main reasons people commit suicide: feeling alone and misunderstood in their depression. It has the feel of an intervention by someone just as confused as the listener, but asking the person to hold on at at least explore their options before making a final decision.

So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new. This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus. Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness". The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1. All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy. And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns) There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.

Like a lot of the other comments are saying, I think this mainly about voyeurism. If the song was about his girlfriend, then why would he use the word spy. If you are a spy it means you shouldn't be caught, that is kind of the whole point, and if you are a voyeur, the whole point of the pleasure you get from it, is the fact that the other people don't know you are watching them. See a bit of a connection there?

Fast Car

"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
