Daughter of the Moon Lyrics
Trail amidst the snow-clad trees, winding is the way
Sunless is the path we roam, bitter is the air we breathe
Fell is the icy blast, coming from the hills
Blowing through my ailing heart, wailing in the emptiness inside
Vanished is the light we had, hidden deep in rimy soil
Bereft of us the one we cherished, lost for ever our love
Still at night I see her figure
Flickering on moonlit glades
But passing is the hope she's giving
Just a faintest breath of air and she's gone again
The clouds are moving heavily, across the livid sky
Yonder the hues are darkening, slowly turning grey to black
For the two who stray in dusk, all hope is long since gone
Cruel is the winter's reign, merciless the grasp of despair
For what mirth there is left in life for a motherless son
What solace in this world for a widower to find
Slender the shape in night, unbearable the beauty
Shining in the silvery light, watching me with wistful eyes
Evanescent this vision, unattainable this illusion
But an image in my troubled dreams, hewn out of yearning and rue
Sunless is the path we roam, bitter is the air we breathe
Fell is the icy blast, coming from the hills
Blowing through my ailing heart, wailing in the emptiness inside
Bereft of us the one we cherished, lost for ever our love
Flickering on moonlit glades
But passing is the hope she's giving
Just a faintest breath of air and she's gone again
Yonder the hues are darkening, slowly turning grey to black
For the two who stray in dusk, all hope is long since gone
Cruel is the winter's reign, merciless the grasp of despair
What solace in this world for a widower to find
Shining in the silvery light, watching me with wistful eyes
Evanescent this vision, unattainable this illusion
But an image in my troubled dreams, hewn out of yearning and rue

i think that this song's meaning can relate to any person who has lost in any way someone they love/loved.. the theme of this song is beatifully dreary and mournful, yet so gentle and elegant... what i love about insomnium is the way they use nature and with its wind and fading light and so on to reference how we feel. -
"Trail amidst the snow-clad trees, winding is the way Sunless is the path we roam, bitter is the air we breathe Fell is the icy blast, coming from the hills Blowing through my ailing heart, wailing in the emptiness inside"
"The clouds are moving heavily, across the livid sky Yonder the hues are darkening, slowly turning grey to black For the two who stray in dusk, all hope is long since gone Cruel is the winter's reign, merciless the grasp of despair"
and just as the bright colours (hues) of day fades beyond the horizon into night (grey to black), he was once happy and cheerful and that faded away as the one whom he loved faded away......
for me, this song is more than just great guitar riffs and vocals accompanied by deep lyrics. Approx 5 years ago, I was extremely close to a very woman and had to leave her for reasons that are irrelevant. and this song was the song that related almost exactly to how i felt at that time. i could still picture her standing at the entrance of my verander, the lovely curvature of her body.. i remembered the her scent. gosh, it was a very difficult time for me. and yet, like in the song, this beautiful image of her was unbearable, unnattainable, and formed out of yearning and rue..... i truly did believe our love was lost forever....
which brings me to the reason for posting up a comment now after all these years. to my surprise and amazement, she has returned into my life a few days ago... which brings me back to song now.....
gosh, i love insomnium... and i guess i may have never stopped loving her........
i guess the person in the lyrics lost his lover and still can see a faint picture of her, therefore the mood is quite depressing.
nice melodic death metal, another good song from insomnium, imho.
I can relate to this. My dad dies when I was 9. My best friend dies when I was 14. You see them everywhere and every little thing reminds you of them in some way. You never recover. This is basically what this song is about.
My take on the song is based from reading other lyrics from this album.
It seems that the lyrics depict a mournful tone from someone who has lost their mother. In this case "For what mirth there is left in life for a motherless son. What solace in this world for a widower to find" states this.
In the other lyrics the writer searches for meaning in a world he cannot comprehend due to the loss of his mother. Not only the loss of his mother he speaks of. but a family feud that has come from all this.
"Trail amidst the snow-clad trees, winding is the way Sunless is the path we roam, bitter is the air we breathe Fell is the icy blast, coming from the hills Blowing through my ailing heart, wailing in the emptiness inside
Vanished is the light we had, hidden deep in rimy soil Bereft of us the one we cherished, lost for ever our love"
this explains the death of his lover
"Still at night I see her figure Flickering on moonlit glades But passing is the hope she's giving Just a faintest breath of air and she's gone again

i think this about the dreams he has about being with her again, and then waking up to realize she is not really there...
"For what mirth there is left in life for a motherless son What solace in this world for a widower to find"
now this intruges me, as it brings in a son..
"Slender the shape in night, unbearable the beauty Shining in the silvery light, watching me with wistful eyes Evanescent this vision, unattainable this illusion But an image in my troubled dreams, hewn out of yearning and rue"
this explains the dream a little more and also tells that it troubles him greatly.
i dont understand the hint towards a son though? there is only the one line.
forever smacked: "bitter is the air we breathe" "for the two who stray in dusk".

I also wonder whether this is a continuation of the track "The day it all came down"
