Junior's Farm Lyrics

You should have seen me with the poker man
I had no money and I bet a grand
Just in the nick of time I look at his hand
I was talking to an Eskimo
Said he was hoping for a fall of snow
When up popped a sea lion ready to go

Let's go let's go let go let go
Down to junior's farm where I want to lay low
How life, high life, go let's go
Take me down to Junior's farm
Take me down Jimmy

At the Houses of Parliament
Everybody's talking about the President
We all chip in for a bag of cement
Ollie Hardy should have had more sense
He bought a gee-gee and he jumped the fence
All for the sake for a couple of pence

Let's go let's go let go let go
Down to junior's farm where I want to lay low
How life, high life, go let's go
Take me down to Junior's farm

I took my bag into a grocery store
The price is higher than the time before
Old man asked me why is it more
I said you should have seen me with the poker man
I had a honey and I bet a grand
Just in the nick of time I looked at his hand

Let's go let's go let go let go
Down to junior's farm Where I want to lay low
How life, high life, go let's go
Take me down to Junior's farm

Let's go let's go
Down to junior's farm where I want to lay low
How life, high life, go let's go
Take me down to Junior's farm
Everybody tag along
Take me down to Junior's farm

Take me back
\Take me back
I want to go back
Yeah yeah, yeah yeah

"bag of cement"

As in stoned.

Actually, no. I wrote the lines

"At the houses of Parliament, ev’rybody’s talking ’bout the President, we all chip in for a bag of cement."

as a veiled reference to a prior album I was on where the line was "wow we know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall."

It's a reference to politicians. In JF, it's a reference to cement shoes for the lot of them. Cheers.

The first line should read 'poker', which is card game.

Almost every verse (maybe every verse) is about cocaine.

Eskimo, hoping (not hopping) fall of snow... sea lion = C line....

Took my bag, price was higher....

I don't know who Holly Hardy is, but I'm hearing Holly, not Ollie. I'm guessing it's a well known person in the UK around the time this song was made. Sports? Government? Anyway, 'bought a gee-gee' looks like another coke reference.

Bag of cement is about the old gangster stories' murder tactic from the 1920s or 30s, also known as cement galoshes or cement overshoes.

I think Paul was really into coke around this time. He has other songs about it, like Monkberry Moon Delight.

Song Meaning

@morecowbellz Thanks for validating "poker". Seeing "pocker" made me raise an eyebrow.

@morecowbellz Olly Hardy was better known as Oliver Hardy, the fat member of the "Laurel and Hardy" comedy duo.

"Junior's Farm" seems to make some political statements about inflation (rampant at the time) and about Nixon, but the gist of it is that things out of one's control will drive you crazy if you let them. Nonetheless, it's the tune and the performance that make this song a jewel. It's a top notch rocker, and Jimmy's blazing solo holds up well. One of the finest Wings singles.

I love this song so much! It's light and upbeat and catchy. I really don't understand the lyrics much, although I'm positive they do mean something. The whole song is great and is actually kind of funny. It's just another one of Paul's amazing masterpieces.

I see I'm not the only one who thinks this is a remake of 'Get Back'. Even down to the lead guitar. Is this a slight slam at John who was admittedly not a lead guitar player?? I've always wondered. The lyrics are obscure and ultimately meaningless but fortunately not as embarrassing as some of Paul's stream of thought lyrics tend to be. The eskimo verse edges close though.

A remake of Get Back? Yeah, yeah. He just changed the pacing, chord changes, the tune, the subject matter and the words.

You might have been better off just saying it is in the style of Get Back.

My question is, at the end does he say "I wanna go back" or "I won't go back"?

That one line makes me think this was about the Beatles. Well, that and the part about the sea lion. Isn't that another name fo a walrus?

little Jimmy's solo seems basic, but hard to play the way he ripped it out. He was a fine Guitarist...

Ollie Hardy is Oliver Hardy, of the comedian team Laurel and Hardy. A gee-gee is what an English child would call a horse. It is known that Oliver Hardy loved race horses and owned some. So I read that bit as saying that either Hardy is seen in the song as owning or betting on a horse that "jumped a fence" (as in steeplechase racing), or perhaps that he is seen as riding such a horse (not a good idea for someone as overweight as Hardy). "A couple of pence" = the money he hoped to make off that. I couldn't find any specific historical reference out there to some real incident involving Hardy and a horse, but maybe it is there to be found. While the song could be all about drugs, I tend not to see that. some parts of it may point to that as a double entendre, but the bag of cement seems more topical to Watergate, and overall the impression I get is people reacting to trying times and McCartney wanting to get away and lay low from all that. Seen in that context, Hardy's horse-play is a diversion from what he should be doing, acting in films. Subconsciously, maybe McCartney felt he too was spending too much time on money matters regarding the breakup of the Beatles, Apple Records and the rest of it, but maybe that's trying to push interpretation too far.

Considering the abundance of drug referrences throughout the song, I would like to offer an alternative view on the Ollie Hardy verse. A ''gee-gee'' is slang for a horse, yes. And 'horse' can also be slang for Heroin, So perhaps, in the song, Ollie bought some 'H'. A 'fence' is also a term used to describe someone who sells goods illicitly. So maybe Ollie ''jumped'' the heroin dealer after an argument about the price. Hence the line ''and all for the sake of a couple of pence''.

It's about not having control of the situation so retreating to Juniors farm. He's playing poker, bets a grand confidently but then sees that the opponent has a better hand just in time. The eskimo line is silly but Paul would be out of his depth talking to an eskimo and having a confrontation with a sea lion. He has no control over politics but will donate some cement just to get rid of Nixon. There was rampant inflation in Britain during this time. Nothing he can do about it. Lets just get away from all of this go to Juniors Farm where things are simple.
