Silent House Lyrics
These walls have eyes
Rows of photographs
And faces like mine
Who do we become
Without knowing where
We started from
It's true I'm missing you
As I stand alone in your room
Everyday that will pass you by
Every name that you won't recall
Everything that you made by hand
Everything that you know by heart
And I will try to connect
All the pieces you left
I will carry it on
And let you forget
And I'll remember the years
When your mind was clear
How the laughter and life
Filled up this silent house
One room
Two single beds
In the closet hangs
Your favorite dress
The books that you read
Are in scattered piles
Of paper shreds
Everything that you made by hand
Everything that you know by heart
And I will try to connect
All the pieces you left
I will carry it on
And let you forget
And I'll remember the years
When your mind was clear
How the laughter and life
Filled up this silent house
Silent house
In the garden off the living room
A chill fills the air
And the lilies bloom
And I will try to connect
All the pieces you left
I will carry it on
And let you forget
And I'll remember the years
When your mind was clear
How the laughter and life
Filled up this
And I will try to connect
All the pieces you left
I will carry it on
And let you forget
And I'll remember the years
When your mind was clear
How the laughter and life
Filled up this silent house

I love this song. I think it's a daughter releasing her parent to dementia or Alzheimers.
I agree. This song totally seems like it's about someone with a mother who has Alzheimers. Maybe it's just because my Grandma does, but a lot of the lines seem to fit. Either way this song is beautiful.
Natalie's grandmother suffers from Alzheimers and that's pretty much what the song's about. Great song.
When I heard this song, I was fighting back tears. Although I cannot relate to the song personally, I can relate on trying to connect everything, like with my family's history and etc. It's hard to understand if you don't understand it.
i'm not a DC fan, haven't even heard their version (i'm sure it's good, just not my cuppa tea). I have heard the Neil Finn version with Elly May Barnes doing backing vocals and it is amazing. Woah. I've read that it is about Alzheimers too, makes sense when reading the lyrics. Beautiful.
i love the part where it says i will let you forget...i'm glad there is finally a good song out there about what happens to you when you get this horrible disease. i'd rather be diagnosed with cancer than have to forget my family and friends...
Believe it or not, there are people who confuse this song to be about Paul Hester because of the fact Neil Finn co wrote it with the Dixie Chicks.
This song does an amazing job of capturing the emotions of a person caring for someone with Alzheimer's. My grandmother has it, and emotionally it's much worse for my grandfather and her children than it is for her, because, as the song says, they have to "carry it on and let [her] forget".
