I can do a deeper dive into the lyrics later, but my impression or at least at the base level- the song seems to be about Ray not trusting his partner, not willing to let go, and feels the need to compete.

Some lyrics specifically would be “You're gonna look for me and I'll be gone”, “Tryin' to make a fool of me”, “Well you're goin' 'round here with your head so hard, I think I'm gonna have to use my rod”, and “Last night you were dreaming and I heard you say "Oh, Johnny" when you know my name is Ray”.

That seems to sum up the general meaning, but there’s more in there too.
