Q&A
Prana Ferox Lyrics
spoken: you wake up in the morning feeling gloriously alive
with the firm conviction that the problems that disturbed you in the past
will now disappear disappear disappear
into the midnight of your consciousness.
I went down to the basement
to check up on the sour mash
I looked down to the nonreactive ceramic tub
it was bubbling.
I had stirred up the dust on the stairs coming down.
I saw the dust devils swarming around.
incoming sun beams cut them apart.
and I watched a shadow pass across my heart.
you were upstairs in the kitchen with your head against the sink.
trying to cool down.
trying to cool down.
I know you don't believe me but I could hear you breathing
I looked into the tub and there the mixture was seething
with new life.
new life all around.
I had stirred up the dust on the stairs coming down.
you were upstairs in the kitchen with your head against the sink.
trying to cool down.
trying to cool down.
yeah.

I don't know how Darnielle likened bootlegged whisky to dying love, but he has.
Found this: Prana is a Sanskrit word meaning 'breath' and refers to a vital, life-sustaining force of living beings and vital energy in natural processes of the universe.
Ferox simply mean wild and/or spirited.
I think the beginning is supposed to be one of those sleep hypnosis tapes.
I didn't think it was likening making alcohol to dying love. I thought it was comparing making alcohol to like... love growing or getting better.
Like the sunbeams cut the dust devils apart and the shadow came off of his heart.
also,
new life all around.
I don't see how the song could be about love growing or getting better when there are allusions to a fight just having occurred, with the "she" in the lyrics "trying to cool down" at the sink. Another clue for the fight is the opening spoken word piece, the "problems that disturbed you in the past". The life that is now seething in the tub I suppose is the fruit of the fermentation process, the bacteria growing (I really don't have much of an idea how the process works specifically, so don't take my word for it).
It seems to me he has gone down stairs, getting away from something that was losing life (at least in his life), to something that was gaining life, the alcohol. From relationship to extreme alcoholism isn't a new idea, nor is it a very good idea, ha.
@freddy All depends on your perspective, I suppose. Making bootleg whiskey is considerably more rewarding than some relationships. At least you get something of value, however dubious.
