Empire State Lyrics
been the crawl of a mountain been a link in the chain
been scolded for stealing been told to behave
been reading the forecast something's coming this way
but it's taking forever i'm too tired to maintain
that i'm slow
been a scratch on the surface been a clog in the drain
been melodramatic been sleeping for days
been one in a million been a million to one
this is taking forever it always seems to return
that i'm slow
all hands up salute the empire state
faith be true you know the way
ten feet tall in this an empty space
fallen walls all around destroyed again
destroyed again
been digging to china been a fish in the sea
been talking to jesus he's not talking to me
been reading the forecast something's coming this way
but it's taking forever it always seems to return
that i'm slow
all hands up salute the empire state
faith is true she knows the way
ten miles tall in this an empty space
fallen walls all around we'll build again
rebuild again
been the crawl of a mountain been the link in a chain
been scolded for stealing been carted away
been scolded for stealing been told to behave
been reading the forecast something's coming this way
but it's taking forever i'm too tired to maintain
that i'm slow
been melodramatic been sleeping for days
been one in a million been a million to one
this is taking forever it always seems to return
that i'm slow
faith be true you know the way
ten feet tall in this an empty space
fallen walls all around destroyed again
destroyed again
been talking to jesus he's not talking to me
been reading the forecast something's coming this way
but it's taking forever it always seems to return
that i'm slow
faith is true she knows the way
ten miles tall in this an empty space
fallen walls all around we'll build again
rebuild again
been scolded for stealing been carted away

One of my favorite songs ever. I think there is something about 9/11 involved with it. The walls falling down thing and the title have somethng to do with that. Maybe it has something to do with someone feeling lost or alone after 9/11 b/c they lost someone or something like that.
i think this is about owning up to your faults, and your positives. sometimes you're lucky, sometimes you're unlucky. sometimes you're happy, sometimes you're sad.
Seems to come off as a woe is me kind of song- that nothing's going his way and he's trying to change.
this kinda reminds me of 9/11
relaxing.
I agree with scatogrl, there's a 9/11 allusion in here that I can't put my finger on. The last verse, 10 miles tall in an empty space, fallen walls, and New York's nickname is the Empire State. But I haven't put it together yet.
I agree about the 9/11 bit... the whole song seems to be like from the perspective of someone greatly affected by it.
The song sounds like its about how we've been apart of a large world, doing our own part and feeling alone and full of dispair. However, 9/11 happens and suddenly we realize that we each do our own part in keeping the world together and we no longer feel alone because we've all been affected by it ("we'll build again, rebuild again").
I think this song might have to do with 9/11. But I think it's a song about feeling lost and alone more than anything. It's one of my top-three Guster song and one of my top songs in general. It's a beautiful song.
this song 100% has to do with sept 11 they started writing this album in 2003 and may of its songs are influenced by their liberal view on politics. i love this song.
