Stones Lyrics
Stones would play inside her head
And where she slept,
They made her bed
And she would ache
For love and get but stones
La la la la la la la la la
Lordy child
A good day's comin'
And I'll be there to let the sun in
And bein' lost
Is worth the comin' home
La la la la la la la la la on stones
You and me, a time for planting
You and me, a harvest granting
The every prayer ever prayed
For just two wild flowers that grow
La la la la la la la la la on stones
And where she slept,
They made her bed
And she would ache
For love and get but stones
A good day's comin'
And I'll be there to let the sun in
And bein' lost
Is worth the comin' home
You and me, a harvest granting
The every prayer ever prayed
For just two wild flowers that grow

This is kind of song that is very introspective and can be read on a multitude of levels. The stones here are a foundation of love. The singer is saying that he is coming to her so that they can build a solid relationship on a foundation of stone. Some have suggested that the Stones though, were the Rolling Stones. I seriously doubt this, as the lyrics would read that he's stealing one of their girlfriends. Neil has always had great respect for the Rolling Stones and even covered a few of their songs.
This was one of the biggest recordings of his career. I played this LP a lot, and I recently found it playing in my (alleged) mind. One lyric that stood out, and never quite made sense to me was "Being lost was worth the comin' home." I believe that ND is a man of faith. I'm starting to see now; prior to finding God I really was lost, and today, having that peace makes me appreciate (just a bit) those 'lost', crazy days. But that's just my opinion! Nonetheless - it's a beautiful song, no matter was on his mind at the time.
