Up In The Air Lyrics
Pass away the hours, hear the footsteps of the past
Walking up the stairs of time, knowing that I'm trapped
Cold winds of indifference persuade a movement south
Thinking that it's better there
The warmer climes that we seek out
Poor bird flies up in the air, never getting anywhere
And how much misery can one soul take?
Trying to fly away might have been your first mistake
Poor bird flies up in the air
Never getting anywhere
Picking petals off a flower
Loves me, loves me not
Is love another way to count the things you haven't got?
We wish the best to all our friends, young and old alike
When the dust has settled in the sky
Well, you can have anything you like
Poor bird flies up in the air, never getting anywhere
And how much misery can one soul take?
Trying to fly away might have been your first mistake
Poor bird flies up in the air
Never getting anywhere
Poor bird flies up in the air, never getting anywhere
And how much misery can one soul take?
Trying to fly away might have been your first mistake
Poor bird flies up in the air
Never getting anywhere
Poor bird flies up in the air
Poor bird flies up in the air
Walking up the stairs of time, knowing that I'm trapped
Cold winds of indifference persuade a movement south
Thinking that it's better there
The warmer climes that we seek out
And how much misery can one soul take?
Trying to fly away might have been your first mistake
Poor bird flies up in the air
Never getting anywhere
Loves me, loves me not
Is love another way to count the things you haven't got?
We wish the best to all our friends, young and old alike
When the dust has settled in the sky
Well, you can have anything you like
And how much misery can one soul take?
Trying to fly away might have been your first mistake
Poor bird flies up in the air
Never getting anywhere
And how much misery can one soul take?
Trying to fly away might have been your first mistake
Poor bird flies up in the air
Never getting anywhere
Poor bird flies up in the air

i think it's fairly obvious bob mould's breakup song with husker du. the last song he penned on the last album they released. it's about how he and grant hart have grown musically apart from each other and he's thinking back over whether or not the band should exist.
I love the backing vocals in this one. Reminds of "Switch Opens" by Soundgarden, another song that might have been a farewell. And both are absolutely beautiful songs.
This is one of my favourite songs.
A friend of mine said that she felt it was uplifting. There is a sort of fist-pumping jubilant sound to it. However, it's lyrics are really the opposite. The chorus is about futility.
"Picking petal offs a flower...Is love another way to count the things you haven't got?" From childhood to adulthood, it's a question that can plague some people.
My favourite lines sound really optimistic "Well, you can have anything you like" but is preceded by a condition that can never ever happen "When the dust has settled in the sky" - dust never settles in the air since it only ever settles on surfaces.
