Country Mile Lyrics
Silver Birch against a Swedish sky
The singer in the band made me want to cry
We're all inside our own heads now
We are leaving new friends
We are leaving this town
I wish you could be here with me
I would show you off like a trophy
The road it winds, it twists, it turns, now my stomach burns
Once again I'll be the foolish one
Thinking a blink of these lashes would make you come
Don't you worry, don't get in a state
I don't believe in true love anyway
Who's being pessimistic now
I could document this as our first and our last row
The more you look forlorn, the more to you I warm
I won't be seeing you for a long while
I hope it's not as long as these country miles
I feel lost
The singer in the band made me want to cry
We're all inside our own heads now
We are leaving new friends
We are leaving this town
I wish you could be here with me
I would show you off like a trophy
The road it winds, it twists, it turns, now my stomach burns
Thinking a blink of these lashes would make you come
Don't you worry, don't get in a state
I don't believe in true love anyway
Who's being pessimistic now
I could document this as our first and our last row
The more you look forlorn, the more to you I warm
I hope it's not as long as these country miles
I feel lost

One of the saddest songs I've heard in a longish time. I suddenly feel like one of those old French movies, or the cover to a Smiths album.
gorgeous song... lyrics obviously reflect on the mind of a detached person. a bit pessimistic, as the song reiterates in one of the lyrics. i truly love this song.
A hauntingly beautiful song...I'm guessing it's about being on the road, touring and missing your lover. I love the line about "who's being pessimistic now" and not believing in true love. (Denial at it's best). The strings add a further sense of lonelieness and atmosphere. I could listen to this all day long.
i think it's about going to a new place, meeting someone special and having to leave them. that's why it's "we are leaving new friends".
unfortunatly I can relate right now.
A beautiful and incredibly well-written song. Just gets to me every time.
indeed presidentlincoln, it is precisely as you state...it is one of the greatest songs to be heard by my old ears..!
The first verse heavily references leaving Sweden, where they recorded the album.
I played this song a couple of times unexpectedly one evening, listening to it really intently. I was vaguely aware of the song before but the real beauty, heartache and disconnectedness hit me that evening... and feeling lost was how I was feeling.
The next morning I was told my GF had took her own life the evening before. A few hours after I'd listened to thing very song. I was in the SW of the UK at the time and she was in London. I will never forget that synchronicity. It is as if I knew what was coming somehow. That was back in May 2018. RIP Emma.
