Tears for Affairs Lyrics
Shedding tears for affairs
Im a funny little thing
I can tell you this for nothing
Affairs dont win
Can you handle one more dirty secret?
One more dirty night?
Is it true what they say?
Will it make us go blind?
You had to drive
Look me in the eye
Whisper "dont cry"
Ill take an interest in Illustration
It should be a laugh
Your words are with me still
They whisper in the grass
Shedding tears for affairs
Im a stupid little thing
I can tell you this for nothing
You wont win
You had to drive
(I didnt want to)
Look me in the eye
(I found it hard to)
Whisper "dont cry"
(I had to whisper "dont cry")
So I cried
Im a funny little thing
I can tell you this for nothing
Affairs dont win
One more dirty night?
Is it true what they say?
Will it make us go blind?
Look me in the eye
Whisper "dont cry"
It should be a laugh
Your words are with me still
They whisper in the grass
Im a stupid little thing
I can tell you this for nothing
You wont win
(I didnt want to)
Look me in the eye
(I found it hard to)
Whisper "dont cry"
(I had to whisper "dont cry")
So I cried

It is "I had to whisper goodbye" at the end.
@presidentlincoln Yes, you're right, all the lyrics sites apparently just copy/paste the wrong lyrics.

I'm thinking that the song is being sung from "the other woman's" perspective. She feels stupid/silly for falling for a guy that was taken, when she so clearly understood that "affairs never win." That's why he comes in during the chorus to say he didn't want to say goodbye - maybe he has a wife? kids? or just simply can't get out of a relationship because too many eyes are on him. She is his "dirty secret" from the second stanza. At first, I was in denial of her being the one he's cheating with, but it's still sad, I suppose. Who knows why he cheated or why he can't just be with this girl.
obviously one of my favorite songs of the moment.
love the accordian and soft vocals and call and response
isn't it "it's a funny little thing"?, not "I'm...."
either way, great song.
Yes, it seems like it's just about cheating in some way or another. I think the end is emotional. "I had to whisper, so I cried."
I think that line, which is so sad, could be a metaphor...you know, since he HAD to whisper--as in some secret being kept--she cried. I like it a lot.
You had to drive (I didn’t want to) Look me in the eye (I found it hard to) Whisper don’t cry (I had to whisper don’t cry) So I cried
I love this section, just because I can relate to breaking down while having the discussion in the car, how claustrophobic and intense it can get in a closed space like that with no escape.
'affairs don't win' pretty much sums up the song. like philly said, you don't get anything out of having an affair. she feels stupid/silly for getting attached to and crying about this guy.
it sounds more like 'tears for affairs are a funny/stupid little thing'.
Isn't it "I had to whisper goodbye?"
i could swear that it is "you had to try. look me in the eye."
i refuse to hear "drive" seems like try would make more sense right? you had to try to look me in the eye (because "he didnt want to")??
