He knows it isn't what it's supposed to be, because love is "supposed to make you happy" and they're miserable. But how can he go about cliche breakup phrases when their relationship is so much deeper than that? She's in his blood, his love for her predates her existence. He's asking if there's some other way, one that would keep their love alive because he can't just abandon it.

Such an amazing and simple line, which conveys so much.
Bascically a song IMO about a guy who is in love with a girl, but it's all gone wrong. He's desperate to hang on to her but doesn't know how to save the relationship and keep it going anymore. This song is absolutely amazing. Makes me tear up every time. Heartbreaking.
One of the saddest, most beautiful songs there is. This is the kind of thing that makes a strong case for Ryan Adams being the best songwriter of all time...or at least tied with the greats.
