Horseradish Road Lyrics
the way that everybody's voice, comes out muffled when they speak,
the way we take our diminishing inventories,
month to month and
week to week,
the maria callas records on the stereo all the time
you're gonna get yours and i'm gonna get mine.
'cause in this car, in this car,
somebody's bound to get burned.
i know.
i know.
because i've been watching the road turn.
the enigma variations on the radio
the things that i could guess at,
the things that i already know.
and the twelve thousand dollars that turned up in your purse,
you've done something awful.
i've done something worse.
and in this car, in this car,
somebody's bound to get burned.
i know.
i know.
because i've been watching the road turn.
the way we take our diminishing inventories,
month to month and
week to week,
the maria callas records on the stereo all the time
you're gonna get yours and i'm gonna get mine.
'cause in this car, in this car,
somebody's bound to get burned.
i know.
i know.
because i've been watching the road turn.
the things that i could guess at,
the things that i already know.
and the twelve thousand dollars that turned up in your purse,
you've done something awful.
i've done something worse.
and in this car, in this car,
somebody's bound to get burned.
i know.
i know.
because i've been watching the road turn.

This lyric could constitute a two paragraph opening chapter of a post-modern James Caan type novel. After downloading (pirating) the song, and googling to get the lyric, I was so knocked out by it I joined this site just to write my message in a bottle opinion and throw into the Cyber Sea.
This song could be about a man who is leaving his wife or his children with a younger woman who has stolen all the money her rich husband had on hand.
I'm reminded of the lyric from Soft Targets "There is nobody innocent here. I've got more blood on my hands than you do." It's another song of mutually assured cooperative self-destruction. This time the pace is slower, and it relies on extensive low-key imagery. This is muted and mournful for a future (but very certain) tragedy. Diminishing returns, and a turning road. Opera and classical music, and signs of crime and deceit.
Also notice the paralell: Enigma variations ... things I could guess, the things that I already know.
