you were just swinging like a dime
posing with no reason and no rhyme
did you help me find the long way home?
sing me songs that I did not know?
Id been waking up for quite some time
workers breaking pavement outside
then one day at the bus stop getting high
all legs and all hair dye
this is where I realize
my trouble comes with bluest eyes
now when I walk in the room you know its all I can do
to stare at the floor and not to look at you
what do you think I am leaning on the wall?
what do you think I am, or do you think at all?
this is where I realize
my trouble comes with bluest eyes
now when I walk in the room you know its all I can do
to stare at the floor and not to look at you
I flavor to taste because taste is free
there are so few things between the rent and me
you were standing outside of the lines
you were just swinging like a dime
you were something of a charity
and I wanted you to give some to me
but what do you think I am, the smoke in your clothes?
what do you think I am, or do you think at all?
posing with no reason and no rhyme
did you help me find the long way home?
sing me songs that I did not know?
Id been waking up for quite some time
workers breaking pavement outside
then one day at the bus stop getting high
all legs and all hair dye
this is where I realize
my trouble comes with bluest eyes
now when I walk in the room you know its all I can do
to stare at the floor and not to look at you
what do you think I am leaning on the wall?
what do you think I am, or do you think at all?
this is where I realize
my trouble comes with bluest eyes
now when I walk in the room you know its all I can do
to stare at the floor and not to look at you
I flavor to taste because taste is free
there are so few things between the rent and me
you were standing outside of the lines
you were just swinging like a dime
you were something of a charity
and I wanted you to give some to me
but what do you think I am, the smoke in your clothes?
what do you think I am, or do you think at all?

Maybe i'm reading into this too much from my own experience with someone, but...
Seems as if they've fallen for someone who ends up being manipulative/taking advantage of them in some way/just plain not appreciating them...and they realize this. Whether or not they end up acting on the realization and break it off is up for debate, methinks...
I'd have to agree with you, I don't think you're reading too much of it into your own situation. It probably sounds pretty familiar to a lot of people.
i think its about someone become something their not in a relationship, or they could of done better, though it seems like to them they tried their hardest together, but in their fallout proves to be the hardest way actually. maybe everything could of changed if he didn't have so many things in between the rent he could of paid to be with her, and so they could be together. but now, this changed, and nothing really stands in their way anymore, "there are so few things between the rent and me". he's there to stay with her, and he is not smoke that fades into her clothes, and just vanishes. he knows he could of done better to keep it together, but she knows how much trouble shes caused him, both of them know. i don't think he cares though, i think he wants it all. he just wants her to know it and realize it, "who do you think i am"

For the record: This is one of my fav bands.
My take on this song is that he met someone at the bus stop that he really likes. He hasn't made any attempts approach the person because he is either too shy or scared. Meeting this person seems to have turned his life upside down. It may be a coworker or someone he sees frequently.
It's basically about a crush that comes out of nowhere.
" you were just swinging like a dime posing with no reason and no rhyme".
"Id been waking up for quite some time workers breaking pavement outside then one day at the bus stop getting high all legs and all hair dye"
He talks about how he met her and how much he wants her. He starts obsessing over this crush, as most people do, and it almost becomes a pain to him:
"this is where I realize my trouble comes with bluest eyes"
I don't get the impression that they have any kind of relationship or history with the girl he is talking about. In fact, it seems like they have never really ever spoken to each other ever.
what do you think I am leaning on the wall? what do you think I am, or do you think at all?
"now when I walk in the room you know its all I can do to stare at the floor and not to look at you"
He seems to be lamenting over how he doesn't have the guts to make a move, much less even make eye contact. So he simply continues on desiring her from a distance as it were.
I agree that I don't think he has any sort of relationship with this person. I think it's someone he sees, and is totally infatuated with, but it's troubling because he can't seem to do anything about.

I'm curious to know what everything thinks the title is about "Between the rent and me." Obviously taken from the line: "there are so few things between the rent and me". Makes me think of that feeling you get when you know you should do something, but somehow you don't. Kind of frustrated for no reason sort of feeling. Which could be how he feels about the person with blue eyes in the song. Someone he wants to approach but just... isn't.
