Ex-Con Lyrics

Whenever I get dressed up
I feel like an ex-con
Trying to make good (x2)

Jean jacket and tie
Feel like such a lie
When I go to your house
I feel like I'm
Casing the joint
In the grocery store
In line behind a mother and child
I’m gonna take that child
I’m gonna take that child
I’m gonna take that child

See 'cause alone in my room
I feel like such a part of the community
But out on the streets
I feel like a robot by the river

Alone in my room
I feel such a warmth for the community
But out on the streets
Out on the streets
I feel like a robot by the river
Looking for a drink

Great song. It's about not fitting in, but not necessarily being an outcast. The narrator does things that everybody else he knows does - very simple things that people take for granted like going to the grocery store or getting dressed up. But when the narrator does it he feels like he stands out, like he's doing something different or looks different than everyone else. He wants to be 'normal' per se, and do 'normal' things, but he feels so inexplicably out of place. Great song.
