The Heretic Lyrics
Inevitably
It's starting to bleed
And couldn't be stopped, that's justice
Incredible luck, to lift and be struck
What curious things..
A moment to think, before we will sing
The beauties alined, so sweetly
And don't be afraid, don't be afraid
Don't be afraid...
Does this look like that?
[My bumpkin boy]
How cruel you get
I've started again
[My bumpkin boy]
To miss your hands
What carnage you've left
[My bumpkin boy]
And you were dead
Remember your flesh
[My bumpkin boy]
To see us break
Our souls are unrest
What kind of pride is this?
Dry your, dry your eyes
They'll salt his wounds
If burning the flesh means finding the one
Does this look like that?
[My bumpkin boy]
How cruel you get
I've started again
[My bumpkin boy]
To miss your hands
What carnage you've left
[My bumpkin boy]
And you were dead
Remember your flesh
[My bumpkin boy]
To see us break
[Flesh is heretic
My body is a witch
I am burning it]
My bumpkin boy
How cruel you get
I've started again
My bumpkin boy
To miss your hand...
It's starting to bleed

I got that tattoo on Saturday! =) Super stoked!
I think the song is about entropy and to be human is to be naturally and unavoidably a wretched thing. And it is an entropy that has no boundaries and exist in every inch, corner, nook, and cranny of human existence. It's not leapers, prostitutes, gentiles, or queers that are Heretic. It's "flesh" in general - anything human related. We use our bodies to do a lot of Evil things, I don't even have to get into them.
You reap what you sew. In the song, the foolish kid that's inside us all has done things with his body and caused it harm. He cut himself or did something to get a cut; he crossed lines and now he can't stop the bleeding. He's too far gone, etc. But because you reap what you sew, "that's justice."
Incredible luck, to lift and be struck. What curious things.... - that's about the war between good and evil inside everyone. He's being lifted, as by God's hands AND at the same time struck down for disobedience.
Our souls are unrest What kind of pride is this? Dry your, dry your eyes They'll salt his wounds If burning the flesh means finding the one
The Creator that is God put himself into a lose-lose situation. Since he can see the past and future he has no room to be a hero of any kind. If he didn't give humans free will they could never love or truely by loyal to him but giving them free will means leaving them open to leave "carnage" and bring about destruction, etc. BUT because we are what we are and do what we do He needed to send The Son, The One to die to save us. Our falls, our mistakes, our sins, our burning of the flesh leads to finding the One.
The song is about falling short, SINNING, but it's not really your fault. At the end of the day, you ask yourself if "this" (what you're doing or caught up, the path your on) looks like "that" (where you SHOULD be, on the right path) and the answer is always no. Always.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this song!!! It's too good
its definately bumbkin boy..
bumpkin:
Noun An awkward, unsophisticated person; a yokel. Etymology
websters, bitch
Anorexic
"Flesh is heretic. My body is a witch. I am burning it.
Yes I am torching her curves and paps and wiles. They scorch in my self denials.
How she meshed my head in the half-truths of her fevers
Till I renounced milk and honey and the taste of lunch.
I vomited her hungers. Now the bitch is burning.
I am starved and curveless. I am skin and bone. She has learned her lesson.
Thin as a rib I turn in sleep. My dreams probe
A claustrophobia, A sensuous enclosure. How warm it was and wide
Once by a warm drum, once by the song of his breath and in his sleeping side.
Only a little more, only a few more days sinless, foodless,
I will slip back into him again as if I had never been away.
Caged so I will grow angular and holy,
Past pain, keeping his heart such company
As will make me forget in a small space the fall
Into forked dark, into python needs heaving to hips and breasts and lips and heat and sweat and fat and greed."
amazing song!!

I don't believe this song is in anyway based on the Salem Witch Trials. When he refers to his body being a witch, and burning it.. I think it is just him coming clean.. or starting over. Like, planting your fields, the soil gets old, you burn it, and start again.

Well looking at the song, a "Bumpkin Boy" is referring to a boy that has sexual relations with a women for the first time, bumpkin showing that he is unsure on what to do, or how to go about engaging in the sexual activity. This is from the phrase, "I use to be a Bumpkin Boy, now I am a Bumpkin Man." And the reason why it is called the Heretic is because its going against the ideals of the church, which is do not have sex until marriage. So he constantly says,[Flesh is heretic, My body is a witch...

And the reason why it is called the Heretic is because its going against the ideals of the church, which is do not have sex until marriage. So he constantly says,[Flesh is heretic, My body is a witch I am burning it] he's discussing the inner turmoil he has about having sexual interaction, and how his body his physical self was lost within it, he's changed who he is, so he metaphorically burns it, meaning he wishes to start anew, get rid of his old self. His sinful self. I don't know. The song is so incredibly deep, and I believe all meanings and songs have truth to them, its up to your person reflection of the piece.
-Song is art. Art is interpretive. Songs is interpretive as well.
I think I may have an idea of the songs meaning. From the sounds it seems to be religious. Heretic meaning one who doesn't follow the dogma of the church. Then there are the witch referances, relating to the witch trials in Salem MA, with witches being creatures in unison with the devil. Then burning, as in burning at the stake, which was a main method used to kill witches.
So basically the song is about not following faith and realizing it, and trying to find a way to cleanse the soul. Or simply the song can be about the Salem Witch Trials.
Also a few corrections on the lyrics, I think it may be "Punpkin Boy" because of jako-lanterns, in referance to the witch. And another change is the "Pride" part in the breakdown with the female vocalist, she actually says "Brine" which is a salty liquid, or tears.
Agreed, great song.
Cool song. Sometimes it sounds like they're saying "bumpkin boy", sometimes it sounds like "pumpkin boy"...I can't tell which it really is (maybe both?). But a bumpkin is someone who is considered simple, uneducated, unsophisticated. If they are saying "bumpkin", I think it's used in a condescending way.
It sounds like "pumpkin" to me.
