Feng Shui Lyrics
In this house the décor is obvious up scour,
See clearly the theory of less is more
A plant a pet and books on the shelf
and a frame on the wall where you can
Picture yourself
And your welcome to stay
But even your company must complement
The Feng shui
Even down to what I have on
They do wonder to what
Extent I have gone
Tailored and tapered couture to the curb
Demanding the attention that it does deserve
Fabrics for the forecast of the day
I admit it
Everything is fitted to fall in Feng Shui
More importantly the way that I move
If Im in your town my needles down
On the groove
On site they know my song
And It aint slow and it sho aint long
You see I do not play
Forgive me father I was forced out of Feng Shui
A flow as subtle as a summer breeze
Like the whispering winds and the
The talking trees
Too big to be boxed in it bobs and weaves
It evolves it solves it gives and receives
And everything I say is calculated appropriated
Written and arrange in Feng Shui
See clearly the theory of less is more
A plant a pet and books on the shelf
and a frame on the wall where you can
Picture yourself
And your welcome to stay
But even your company must complement
The Feng shui
Even down to what I have on

This is definitely my favorite song. It's so beautiful and rhythmic, and it sounds like the words were meant to be together. Everything is calculated out in tempo.
The lyrics are wrong. "up scour," = Obscure.

I'm holding the insert to St. Elsewhere in my hand right now, and the correct lyrics are indeed "up scour". By the way, this album is mind-blowing. It is but the fourth album I give a perfect 10 to.
Seeing as the entire album hovers around the themes of mental illness and suicide, my guess is that this song is about Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. The rituals and neuroses that plague the obsessive-compulsive often require strict compliance...:
"Tailored and tapered couture to the curb Demanding the attention that it does deserve Fabrics for the forecast of the day I admit it Everything is fitted to fall in Feng Shui"
And exacting specifications...:
"And everything I say is calculated appropriated Written and arrange in Feng Shui"
Demand of those around the person who has OCD...:
"And your welcome to stay But even your company must complement The Feng shui"
And are difficult to overcome...:
"A flow as subtle as a summer breeze Like the whispering winds and the The talking trees Too big to be boxed in it bobs and weaves It evolves it solves it gives and receives"
Not to mention the fact that there's a similarity between the mainstays of OCD and Feng Shui. They both involve order and placement.
Saltpeter Taff, I take my hat off to you. That is a very astute analysis of the song. I hadn't come to the conclusion of what the song meant. When I read yours, your ideas seemed solid and true. I feel like writing anything extra to that explanation would be gilding the lily.
Saltpeter is ridiculously far off, not even on the same continent... it's got nothing to do with OCD. It's a song about aesthetics, as Cee-Lo himself admits to being very concious of what he wears etc (read some interviews). The idea is every move you make, every word you say is part of who you are and to lead a good life its components must strive towards perfection. And it's all about realizing this while maintaining the proper sense of perspective so as not to be superficial or self concious. It's the sort of persepective you need to create art / music. I'd say the creative mindset is the most prevalent theme of the album and NOT mental illness, though the two are related, no?
k0s don't you feel that there is an undertone of unbalance in the song. He may be talking about the aesthetics to build a good life, as you say, but that in and of itself is extreme. The idea of every little detail of your existence needing to fit a perfected ideal doesn't seem healthy. To rigidly pick your cloths/interior decor/friends etc, to match guidelines then you need to loosen up. To be that obsessed with detail leans strongly toward OCD. Whether the whole cd is of mental illness is irrelevant, the lyrics to this song depict an individual that is seriously tightly wound.
I have to agree with k0s... The idea of having to look perfect all the time fits in with the line
"and a frame on the wall where you can Picture yourself"
But I also have to agree with Saltpeter and 2pieces.. This song is just one which can be taken and seen in so many different ways there is no real way to know what it's about unless you wrote it yourself. Pretty much like all of Gnarls' music. But in any case, great song. Love it very muchly
quoted from k0s: "The idea is every move you make, every word you say is part of who you are and to lead a good life its components must strive towards perfection."
That's the rough definition of OCD you asshole.
Although I agree that the most creative/eclectic people generally suffer from mental illness. I also believe that everyone suffers from some sort of mental illness, but most people deny or try to hide it. The true artists of the world just let it all out.
I really want to agree with k0s interpretation but it does make sense that this song is about a medical condition. After all this entire album is named after medical drama from the 80s
You all have really interesting interpretations...
I think this songs is about "inner feng shui". Having your inner self properly arrange will definitely project outwardly. I think we'd all benefit from a little inner OCD.
