Its about loss and a man contemplating his mortality. Heaven doesn't give a flip. Girl leaves, black mood sets in... But he's also contemplating how short and meaningless life can be... Warren often sings about death...and mortality. Life ain't always pretty.

I love the line about the 7-11. Warren never shyed away from incorporating lyrics that are undeniably modern into his work. Certain writers, even ones I love, like Bob Dylan, in an effort to be timeless, will be impressionistic and try to write songs that could have been written 300 years ago or 300 years from now. Warren's songs have a very acute awareness of his place not only geographically, but of this moment in time as well, and that's just one of many rare treats his music has to offer.

Possibly my favorite. I think WZ is talking about how short life is, but how life carries on. We may lose a loved one to death, but that only affects us, and not the rest of the world.

The narrator thinks back on his past as he leaves the convenience store where he just murdered the teller and robbed the cash register.

When my partner was dying of cancer last year, especially during the last couple months when it was obvious she wasn't going to make it, this song was playing on almost endless loop in my mind...especially the third verse, and the lines about "the front door closing forever".

I remember the night the ambulance came because she'd stopped breathing. As they loaded her up on the stretcher and got her out of there, I remember those few lines playing in my head over and over again, all through the drive to the hospital and the wait and when I was brought in to see the body for the last time. I will never be able to hear this song without going back to those moments. And sometimes, that's all right.

He looks at life and loss really broadly here - all life folds back into the sea - and yet there\'s a social context. Bruce might sing his uplifting songs but his life is different from that of the poor, whose suffering just goes on and on. Heartbreaking.

arooj!,I totally love this song! I actually don't think this song is about stalkers or anything, rather about everyone around Daniel and the rest of the band at the time after Frogstomp was released. Tey became famous and therefore people acted differently towards them and this was Daniel's response. He's mainly angry and depressed. He doesn't really care aobut life and wouldn't mind dying. |
