Heaven When We're Home Lyrics
Don't know what time it is
I've been up for way too long
And I'm too tired to sleep
Called my mother on the phone
She wasn't home
And now I'm wandering the streets
I've been a fool, I've been cruel to myself
I've been hanging on to nothing
When nothing could be worse than hanging on
And something tells me
There must be something better than all this
I've fallen many times in love
And every time it's been with the wrong man
Still I'm out there living one day at a time
And doing the best I can
'Cause we've all made mistakes that seem to lead us astray
And every time they help to get us where we are today
And it's as good a place as any
And it's probably where we're best off anyway
'Cause it's a long and rugged road
And we don't know where it's headed
But we know it's gonna get us where we're going
And when we find what we're looking for
We'll drop these bags and search no more
'Cause it's gonna feel like heaven when we're home
It's gonna feel like heaven when we're home
There's no such thing as perfect
And if there is we'll find it when we're good and dead
Trust me, I've been looking
But tonight I think I'll go and take a bath instead
Then maybe I'll walk a while
Feel the earth beneath me
They say if you stop looking it doesn't matter if you find it
And who's to say that even if I did
It's what I'm really looking for
And it's a long and rugged road
And we don't know where it's headed
But we know it's gonna get us where we're going
And when we find what we're looking for
We'll drop these bags and search no more
'Cause it's gonna feel like heaven when we're home
It's gonna feel like heaven when we're home
I've been up for way too long

Love this song. Indeed it is a long and rugged road with an uncertain path, but it will get us where we're going. There is a non-specific sense of spirituality that runs through many of Moody's and The Jennys' songs. Such great lyrics, melody, harmony, and heart.
Ruth Moody of the Wailin' Jennys explained the meaning: She was on a tour with her first band, Scrooge McDuck, which was comprised of "four hygienically challenged boys and myself." Ruth was feeling lonely in Calgary and tried calling home in Winnipeg, missing the comfort of her mother's voice. Her sister answered the phone, but her mother wasn't home. This song was written from the lonesomeness bred by being away from home. Moody dedicates it to her mother.
Wow. I can't believe no one has commented yet. This song is my anthem, probably my favorite song ever (if such a thing is even possible). Absolutely beautiful and I love so many of the lyrics:
"Cause we've all made mistakes that seem to lead us astray And every time they help to get us where we are today And it's as good a place as any And it's probably where we're best off anyway"
"Then maybe I'll walk awhile Feel the earth beneath me"
Those are some of my favorite parts, but I really could just end up quoting the whole song.
Just had my first break up, after almost a year of dating. This song holds so much meaning right now. I'm probably going to be listening to it a lot over the next few days.
