20 Degrees Lyrics

the statues and concrete headstones
never taught you how to stop being alone,
even with so many real people standing around.
you're crossing the dotted yellow line
as the headlights are brightening up your eyes.
the time for hesitation and second thoughts is gone.

and there's only one way left to do this.
you're the spent wood's last ashes
near the bottom of the fire.
and every time i dive inside
your salty sea of misery,
you can't hide
the only thing keeping me alive.

just wish i could've been there to protect you
from everything that happened:
your daddy dying slowly
and your mama leaving faster.
but i know all the shit that broke you
is what keeps our bodies pressed together.
you said, "20 degrees this friday, but california's burning."

and there's only one way left to do this.
you're the spent wood's last ashes
near the bottom of the fire.
every time i dive inside
your salty sea of misery,
you can't hide
the only thing keeping me alive.

To me, this is clearly a love song for his wife. The second verse makes it pretty clear, as his wife's parents were killed when she was young. I think this song didn't make the record becase, as Rocky once said in an interview that he likes his songs to walk a fine line between fact and fiction. I feel like this song may have been too overtly personal.

This song is a love song but it's about someone who killed themselves. Thats what the first passage is about, before it goes on to explain her parents in the second verse.

i agree that its a love song about someone who committed suicide because of the first few lines.. i love this song and ive been going through so much&im only 13 and so it makes me sad that someday when i tell my husband about everything he will probably say"i wish i couldve been there to protect you from everything that happened, your daddy dying slowly and your mama leaving faster.but i know all the shit that broke you is what keeps our bodies pressed together" thats my favorite part
