I don't know anything for certain, but it sounds like a mental reflection on a divorce. The first three lines would be the children comparing and deciding with whom they want to live. The second verse would be a parallel of how the children's toys won't stay together, much like their parents' relationship.

The chorus, then, is an ironic recollection of how they always felt close because of the way they held hands, but now the road only serves as a strectch of separation.

The middle section is a bit hazy, but the fourth verse is an allusion: even though they didn't want anything to change, they realized that wishing could not take them to any place but where they were.

in reply to above, middle verse is ofcourse then reffering to the difference in family make up, from an average family of 4 to just one (one of the parents), standing alone, on the kitchen floor.

to me it seems like it's about three kids dying, getting hit by the a car while crossing the street like

This song is clearly about growing up, but not wanting to and thus reminiscing about childhood

"and the days when we learnt screaming are we there yet doesnt get you any faster" --> Growing up and maturing

"...whilst holding hands and we'll hold on" --> holding on to parents hand as a metaphor for trying to cling to their childhood, scared to grow up

"Cross the road and say goodbye, there wasn't a dry eye" --> Crossing the road to the "other side" ie grown up life, parents "crying" because they don't like seeing their children all grown up, while the kids are crying because they still want to be children, and are now scared of being independent

At first, i thought this song was just about growing up, but after seeing Kyle's comment, i see it in a totally new way.

Its about a parent dying. At first he reminisces about their childhood and then the crossing the road has become fatal and metaphoric for dying: "Cross the road, say goodbye. There wasn't a dry eye, there wasn't a dry eye"

I think it's simply about growing up.

The first two verses seem like memories of childhood. The chorus seems to me to be a metaphor for growing up and how that in childhood they have that hand to hold and the advice of looking left and right and someone to keep them save, but once they've crossed the road, they don't want to let go into adulthood, so they "hold on" (to childhood).

I love this verse, it's fantastic. Basically I read it as there used to be 4 children in the family, but three have grown up and moved out, and just the one is left, the one who's "closest to the kitchen floor", i.e., the smallest and youngest one (stereotypically the youngest is always the "family favourite").

I think not only is it about growing up but maybe specifically about moving out, "there wasn't a dry eye" makes me think they're describing specific occasion where there were tears, as opposed to the vagueness of growing up. « Just a thought :)
