De Ballit of de Boll Weevil Lyrics
You may talk about the latest,
The latest of your home,
But these boll weevils,
They may rob you of a home,
They're a-lookin' for a home,
They're a-lookin' for a home.
Well the first time I seen a boll weevil,
He was sittin' on the square,
The next time I seen the boll weevil,
He had his whole family there,
He was lookin' for a home,
He was lookin' for a home.
He was lookin' for a home,
He was lookin' for a home,
He was lookin' for a home,
He was lookin' for a home.
Well, the farmer he took the boll weevil,
And put him in the sand,
The boll weevil said to the farmer,
"You treat me just like a man.
And I'll have a home,
I will have a home."
The old lady said to the old man,
"I'm trying my level best,
To keep these boll weevils,
Out of my brand new cotton dress,
'Cause it's full of holes,
it's full of holes."
The old man said to the old lady,
"What do you think of that?
These boll weevils,
got into my brand new Stetson hat,
And it's full of holes,
and it's full of holes
It's full of holes,
it's full of holes.
It's full of holes,
Yeah it's full of holes.
Well, If anybody asks you people,
Who sang you this song,
You tell 'em it was Jackie White,
He's done been here and gone.
He's lookin' for a home,
He's lookin' for a home.
The latest of your home,
But these boll weevils,
They may rob you of a home,
They're a-lookin' for a home,
They're a-lookin' for a home.
He was sittin' on the square,
The next time I seen the boll weevil,
He had his whole family there,
He was lookin' for a home,
He was lookin' for a home.
He was lookin' for a home,
He was lookin' for a home,
He was lookin' for a home.
And put him in the sand,
The boll weevil said to the farmer,
"You treat me just like a man.
And I'll have a home,
I will have a home."
"I'm trying my level best,
To keep these boll weevils,
Out of my brand new cotton dress,
'Cause it's full of holes,
it's full of holes."
"What do you think of that?
These boll weevils,

and it's full of holes
it's full of holes.
It's full of holes,
Yeah it's full of holes.

He's lookin' for a home,
He's lookin' for a home.

i remember this from somewhere... i remember jack saying that 'remember who sang you this song'
Marvelous rendition of an great ancient Leadbelly song from the early 1900's...
This is the song they usually use to end their shows, they did at least on both the elephant and satan tours. I love it on Under Blackpool Lights, when he asks the crowd to sing along. "Then you'll be happy, I'll be happy, and lord knows Meg'll be happy!" I freakin love this song. (as for you neverheardofhim you probably heard it on blackpool lights)
This Song Is Great. It's Old, And Old=Cool.
god is this a classic ending song.
De Ballit of de Boll Weevil is written phonetically in ebonics. Interesting fact.
has anyone heard the live version where jack starts ranting and swearing at "punk" in the audience?
so... what is a "boll weevil" anyone?
A boll weevil is a beetle that feeds off cotton bolls, the young buds of the cotton plants. There was a particularly big outbreak in the 20s, which really wiped the American cotton industry.
In this context, I think the boll weevil is referring to a drifter, a vagabond who goes from town to town, hence the search for a home. He's called a boll weevil probably because he's seen as a pest, leeching off people like the boll weevil feeds off of farmers' crops. Undertones of the racial divide ("You treat me just like a man / And I'll have a home") makes me think this is possibly about a black drifter.
