underneath the water
where everything is pretty
i met the girls and we went swimming
i held my breath until finally i died
and i left my friends for the other side
everything was gold
and everything was green
i saw a sea monkey king
and a sea monkey queen
they fed me cottage cheese
and chicken of the sea
then they sent me on my way
with a kiss on the cheek
ooh la la
oohie chacha
ooh la chachacha
1 2 3 4 5
once i caught a fish alive
6 7 8 9 10
then i let him go again
why did you let him go?
because he bit my finger so
which one did he bite?
this little finger on the right
i laughed with clams
i gambled with the sharks
whispered secrets with the starfish
til my heart had tore apart
ask me no more questions
i'll tell you no more lies
about my secret swim to the other side
where everything is pretty
i met the girls and we went swimming
i held my breath until finally i died
and i left my friends for the other side
everything was gold
and everything was green
i saw a sea monkey king
and a sea monkey queen
they fed me cottage cheese
and chicken of the sea
then they sent me on my way
with a kiss on the cheek
ooh la la
oohie chacha
ooh la chachacha
1 2 3 4 5
once i caught a fish alive
6 7 8 9 10
then i let him go again
why did you let him go?
because he bit my finger so
which one did he bite?
this little finger on the right

whispered secrets with the starfish
til my heart had tore apart

about my secret swim to the other side

I'm not sure of the deeper meaning of this song - there may or may not be one. I wouldn't be surprised to learn either that it was a profound allegory, or a daydream that turned into a playful exercise in songwriting for Lisa Marr, Robyn Iwata, and Neko Case - three incredible artists at the beginning of their careers. Either way, it's unique and brilliant. Seeing the video for "Go Fish" on a bootleg VHS tape is one of the fondest memories from my childhood.
