I've walked the distance, I paid my dues and tried to have a go at what I thought I knew was real, held no appeal
I've been to places, I've seen the tidings,
I bought a book of rules for every coin that I could steal
And so I came to gaze upon the stars, when they were yet unborn
And consequently, tear at my old scars, and the mask I had outworn
So when I'm crying alone
Yeah, when I'm cold as a dying stone
Grow me a garden of roses
Paint me the colors of sky and rain
Teach me to speak with their voices
Show me the way and I'll try again
I've heard the rumors, started fires, I sowed a sordid lot of plays for keeps for what I need, behold the demons that I freed
I've tried my best at wearing the hard hat, but healing doesn't seem to happen when you hide away the seed
And so I came across the medicine man, and he showed me what I'd forlorn
For if I'm stayed it happens by my own hand, and my own voice full of scorn
So when I'm crying alone
Yeah, when I'm cold as a dying stone
Grow me a garden of roses
Paint me the colors of sky and rain
Teach me to speak with their voices
Show me the way and I'll try again
Without you I'm nothing at all
And life has the face of a morbid game
With you nothing seems impossible
It all seems to fit the frame
So when I'm crying alone
Yeah, when I'm cold as a dying stone
Grow me a garden of roses
Paint me the colors of sky and rain
Teach me to speak with their voices
Show me the way and I'll try again

'So when I'm crying alone Yeah, when I'm cold as a dying stone' The narrator is without feelings. He can't feel (or doesn't allow himself to feel) emotional highs and lows anymore, because of the things that he did and things that happened in the past.
He is asking someone (girl maybe) to show him what it's like to feel again. That his life is not only grey anymore, but full of colours (feelings.) 'Paint me the colors of sky and rain' The sky as a beautifull blue (happiness) but also the colour of the rain (sadness). In other words, just to feel again. No high without a low.
Long story short: it's about bringing feelings back and just to feel alive again.
Good song, catchy too.
nod I agree with you on this, MaximumMax. Seems logical.

This is the second song I heard by PotF and I absolutely love it. I'm thinking about doing a cover of it. :)

~Tsual
Agree too =] great song
You hit it right on the head, broski.
So true! It's all because of the things the traveller did in the past, the things that he abandoned (love, naivety or smt like that) to "try to have a go at what I thought I knew was real" But one day, he realized that "I'm cold as a dying stone", cause the things that he had thown away, are the things he actualy need most.

I specially love the part "And so I came to gaze upon the stars, when they were yet unborn. And consequently, tear at my old scars, and the mask I had outworn" and "I've heard the rumors, started fires, I sowed a sordid lot of plays for keeps for what I need, behold the demons that I freed", so imaginative! Everytimes listen to the song, I always have an odd idea that I've just closed the last page of a fiction, a poetic surreal fiction, slightly sad but not woeful.
Poets of the Fall are of the few bands who can actually claim the title 'poet'. The lyrics are just so fucking beautiful. If surrealism in visual art could be translated into music, this would be it.
I think the song is about "CRY for Help". The part where "so when i am crying alone and when i'm cold as a dying stone grow me a garden of roses" so he is asking for some motivation, some guidance, boost of encouragement. The first stanza explains how he tried hard but could not succeed still doesnt hold grudges, he has been to places and followed but still no success. Finally, he looked at people who succeeded for inspiration (gazed upon the stars) but no luck there too. Now he is full of scorn and trauma where he found a medicine man, who said to let go and forgive. now he is asking either god, lover or teacher to help him guide the way.
I haven't sat down to really listen to it yet, but god damn is this one hell of a song.
This song is probably my favorite on their new album. PoTF is amazing! I love everything I've heard by them.
Has anyone seen the AMV of Final Fantasy with this song? The video is really beautiful and suits this song very well.

Incredible song, in fact one of my favourite songs. Such a sad, yet uplifting song, makes me feel no matter what happens i can pick myself up and there will be the girl i love there for me.
Note that in the chorus the narrator is speaking to himself. Rather than "crying alone" and "cold as a dying stone", the narrator is telling himself to do something positive with his life (i.e. "paint a picture of roses").
Wisdom is the narrator's medicine man.
In retrospect, maybe he's asking for help. He finds he can't find a way to help himself until he discovers the wisdom of the medicine main (perhaps a psych doc?). But anyway, note the theme of curing pain with positive actions. Also note that the vocalist repeats the word "do" several times after talking about accomplishing positive actions.
I think he\'s describing a psychedelic experience. He mentioned a medicine man. It sounds like my first experience with mushrooms. He might\'ve done something like peyote or Ayahuasca, though, if he\'s visiting a medicine man.
